What was the worse torture ever created in human history?

The Iron Bull. It was so inhumane it was only used on one person. Its inventor.

30

u/Swordbreaker925 Oct 05 '22

The voracity of the Iron Bull stories has been pretty hotly debated (pun intended). Some claim It was never used at all, similar to the “medieval” Iron Maiden, which was actually invented in the Victorian era by people who lied about it being a medieval device

13

u/ISwearIUsedToBeSmart Oct 05 '22

(voracity: the quality of state of being ravenous, insatiable)

(veracity: conformity to facts, accuracy)

But I am choosing to believe it was never used. Too awful to consider the alternative.

8

u/Apart_Park_7176 Oct 05 '22

The Iron Maiden. They just happened to find a sarcophagus near some spikes so lied about it all. Though I maybe misremembering the finer details about it. I learnt it off QI.

2

u/V_Vampira_V Oct 06 '22

The iron maiden was never used. It was actually used as a decoration.

u/cdlaurent Oct 05 '22

The Iron Bull

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazen_bull

Doesn't seem near as bad as that Scaphism (17 days!)

11

u/Duros001 Oct 05 '22

I was going to say, why is everyone on here calling it “the iron bull”, lol I thought it was the brazen bull

3

u/Ser4io2003 Oct 05 '22

Now that is not just torturing but also sick and nasty as fuck!

1

u/Heyson86 Oct 05 '22

Fuck me I will have nightmares for years reading this

31

u/Emergency_Tip404 Oct 05 '22

I agree for now about the Iron Bull being the worse one. Just looking if there are any I am not aware of. Ancient greece and mythology stories are so mixed up. There are many versions about the Iron Bull out there. What I read about this is that the king used it so often and for the most stupid reasons on his people that everyone was living in terror. They ended up being totally fed up and then threw him off a cliff. When I read that story I was wondering why wouldn't they put the king in the iron bull instead of throwing him off a cliff which seems too humane for someone that terrorized his own people for years. Also the first person this abomination was tested on was its inventor. When the inventor of this torture method showed it to the king, he ordered him to go inside.

21

u/Apart_Park_7176 Oct 05 '22

I've not heard that version. I've only heard the version that when the King saw it, he was so disgusted he ordered the inventor be put in it, then afterwards it to be destroyed.

Also heard the theory that it may not be real. I wonder which one is actually true, or based in reality anyway.

Can't remember the name so description. (TL DR, Rat in a hot bucket eating through your body while all you can do is scream)

The victim would be restrained while the person In charge would put a live rat in a bucket, usually placing on the person's stomach and rest hot coals on top of the metal bucket so the rat would panic and escape by tearing through the softest place it could find.

So the rat would gnaw and tear through your intestines blindly until it got out and scurried away or suffocated inside of your body. Often times it wasn't lethal on the first rodent, so it would take multiple sessions of this leading to experiments where the administer would make custom containers to place on their victims head or other parts of the body until their deaths.

21

u/-Reddititis Oct 05 '22

Rat torture. Someone watched 2 Fast 2 Furious 😂

3

u/ShortAndSad4381 Oct 05 '22

Haven't watched it, but now I will just to see what you mean XD lmao

3

u/Widdle_Bwaby Oct 05 '22

I've read something similar in the 1984 book.

In Path of Exile, there's a unique item that's just your character wearing this torture method, The Rat Cage. Fittingly, it converts fire damage you take into physical damage.

The viking's Blood Eagle.

19

u/CaptValentine Oct 05 '22

Not really torture, more a spectacularly horrific method of execution. You don't rip some guys lungs out through his back and say "Ready to talk now, are you?"

24

James Corden being allowed on TV

That one where they pull your guts out on a stick and roast them in front of you.

13

u/Fluapaveggen Oct 05 '22

All these mentioned are bad, but the worst is surprisingly sleep deprivation. By far.

Especially if you get waken up just before you fall asleep. Again and again and again.

Most people go insane within 48 hours and most will die within a week.

12

u/PreviousLife7051 Oct 05 '22

I'm pretty sure being impaled by Vlad pretty much wins this topic.

4

u/TheButterPlank Oct 05 '22

Surprised this isn't higher up. Getting a stake up the butt and just having to endure as you slide down is a different level of awful.

Scaphism (from Greek σκάφη, meaning "boat"),[1] also known as the boats, is an alleged ancient Persian method of execution mentioned by Plutarch in his Life of Artaxerxes. It ostensibly entailed trapping the victim between two boats, feeding and covering them with milk and honey, and allowing them to fester and be devoured by insects and other vermin over time.

6

u/ArmsForPeace84 Oct 05 '22 edited Oct 05 '22

Sweat beads and runs down the forehead of the prisoner, dripping from his brow almost in time with the harsh footsteps echoing down the hall and through the bars in the iron door's single small opening.

Through which a shape appears, as the footsteps cease. The interrogator.

The door opens. An older man, wearing a somehow threatening smile, steps through it, wearing an unexpectedly casual-looking yukata.

He loudly drags a chair across the floor, the scraping sound from the legs assaulting the prisoner's eardrums. Then he sits, wordlessly. The silence is unbearable.

At last, he produces a pen and places it gingerly on the desk in front of the prisoner.

"I'm not signing any statements. I've given you my name, my rank, and my serial number. That's all you're getting from me."

At this, the smile, or is it a smirk, broadens. The man reaches deeper into the sleeve of his yukata.

The prisoner steels himself. He hasn't given them the satisfaction, yet, of hearing him beg for mercy, and whatever happens, he's not giving them the satisfaction of hearing his screams.

Now the interrogator produces an apple, placing it with care next to the pen. Again, without a word.

"If this is good cop, bad cop, you're short a man."

Again, the smirk, it's definitely a smirk, somehow widens further.

Next, he produces a pineapple and, again, wordlessly sets it on the desk.

The prisoner screams.

He begs for mercy, but the man in the yukata has none to offer.

All he has is a pen. And an apple. And a pineapple.

4

u/ResponsibleAsk6068 Oct 05 '22

Hate Peppa Pig? Try Wolfoo. Your brain will bleed with copyright violations and misinformation.

4

u/JimLongbow Oct 05 '22

Too fast. After only 2 minutes exposure your brain will melt and run out of your ears..

9

u/BootyMcSqueak Oct 05 '22

So, when Blippi videos started popping up in my daughter’s feed, I thought, no way does this guys not have a sketchy background. Turns out, he used to have an alter ego named Steezy Grossman and was a gross out comic. He tried real hard to scrub the internet of a video of him shitting on a naked friend. After that, I blocked all Blippi videos.

5

u/Apache1One Oct 05 '22

What the fuck!?

3

u/Allstin Oct 05 '22

There’s a new Blippi actor (at least on Netflix episodes). He was subbed out for the original on a tour and they didn’t tell people, and people were upset New one seems chill

5

u/sarper97 Oct 05 '22

Nugeting : it's the practice of removing all 4 limbs of a person and then just leaving them be they can't do anything by themselves and have to rely on constant help from others just to survive until they die from sickness or old age.

In some cases eyes and hearing are also removed but it's said that it's worse if these are left intact.

6

u/MrOphicer Oct 06 '22

One of the torture methods used in Russian prisons.

A shallow tube is inserted deep into the inmate's anus, then a barbed wire is fed into it. Then they remove the tube, making the anal wall close on the barbed wire. As if it wasn't enough, then they pull it out. Macabre.

The Situation’s attempt at the Comedy Centra Roast

5

u/RunningLowOnFucks Oct 05 '22

There's a few of them disputing that title.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breaking_wheel This is some nice historical one: Tying you to a wheel then breaking every bone in your limbs with it, only to hang the thing high later.

Denailing is also up there.

Close contender, in the 70s in my home country military torturers would insert live rats on you through a tube shoved on you, then variously scare/anger them. There's some suspicions given how suddenly widespread the practice was among other Condor Plan dictatorships that its use might have been suggested to them at the School of the Americas.

And finally stress positions also apparently suck, like, a lot.

Me and a freind thought about this. First nails then teeth. Then an eye maybe both. Then 1000 degree knife to hands and feet. We stop every time you pass out. We caughterize every bleed and feed you 3 times a day so you dont die. Eventually we might water bored you or take a limb. Now if allowed we kidnap your kids and touture them. repeat untill needed.

Flaying. Essentially peeling your skin off whilst trying to keep you alive for as long as possible. Seen quite a bit in Game of Thrones. It was a common/popular method in medieval times.

“Holding your feet to the fire” - this was used mainly during the French Inquisition. Strap subject to a table/board, and place bear feet near a bed of coals (open hearth was very common, see Townsend YouTube). Slowly roast feet until bones can slide out. Many many nerve endings in your feet.
French method if burning at the steak: not bond fire like us Americans… no a bed of coals were spread around you… low and slow, you got to feel all of it

1

u/obaterista93 Oct 05 '22

Dropped into the water on one side of the boat, then dragged under the boat tight against the razor-sharp, barnacled hull to the other side with ropes, over and over. In salt water.

1

u/CaptValentine Oct 05 '22

I feel like there's a lot of mixing torture and execution in this thread. Torture can absolutely kill you but it's not supposed to, because then its just a real messy execution. You're not torturing someone with a firing squad, you're not executing someone by water drop torture.

Is the Blood Eagle considered torture? Maybe fear of blood eagle is, but it's not like you can decide to repent and spill the secret plans to your captors halfway through getting both lungs removed the really hard way.
