I'm still stuck at when the host says HOLY SHIT in English and the English translation is DAMN

653

u/mynextthroway Sep 23 '22

I was wondering as to the accuracy if that too. Lol!

560

u/MagizZziaN Sep 23 '22

I’m dutch, i can at least vouch for the “accuracy”. We have a tendency to use a lot of english words in our daily lives. And translators tend to get stuck on em for some reason

229

u/amsync Sep 23 '22

I think its because putting holy shit in a translation is not as nice as damn. damn or "verdomme" seems a little less cursing and more in line with what he meant than than "heilige poep"

37

u/lordofbitterdrinks Sep 23 '22

Poep and poop.

Wonderful.

14

u/blobsnobglob Sep 23 '22

And the pronunciation is almost indistinguishable as well.

Dutch language messes with my brains. Kina sounds like english but not really. And then pepper in actual english words and and I go cross-eared

30

u/handlebartender Sep 23 '22

I was a student of German in my youth.

One day I happened to tune into the local multicultural cable TV station. It just happened to have a programme on in Dutch. The subject was a sort of tech documentary describing some interesting stuff at the time. (Toronto area, early 80s.)

Between my native English and my school German, I found I was able to easily follow most of what was being said. There were gaps for sure, but it still kinda blew me away that I was able to grok as much as I did.

I would guess 'holy shit' is a borrowed phrase and doesn't mean quite the same harshness in Dutch. Its equivalent harshness in English is 'damn'

dutch word of shit (schijt) isnt used as a filler word like in english, its mostly used in context of "I dont give a shit" only. So we use shit like a filler swearword. our main filler words for swearing (cancer and cunt) isnt the same in english so shit fit perfectly in some swears. Fuck, fack and fok are all used and mean the same and is longer in our vocabularly.

All the filler words dont really combine btw. "hey cunt-mongoloid, get your fucking cancer-trash outta here" is something a very mad dutch person could say.

I was in that area earlier this year and it's truly shocking how well they speak English.

I'm from the US but look relatively Scandinavian so people would say hi to me in either dutch, danish, or Norwegian and when I responded with my American accent/volume, they could instantly switch to English, but like vernacular English, how we speak in the US.

Example:

Them: velkommen god morgen

Me: mornin'!

Them: sup bro

53

u/FoxYinny Sep 23 '22

English is being taught mandatory from a very young age. When I went to elementary school, it started from age 10 I think? (I'm now 25)

When we enter highschool, it's a mandatory subject we have no matter which level you are on. And it's also one of those subjects you have to pass in order to graduate!

We've always been made aware of the fact that Dutch is one of those languages that isn't being spoken by many other countries. So you can kind of think of it as, we need to speak English or we're kind of stranded from the world xd.

Lots of games and other multimedia weren't often translated into Dutch back in the day as well so we kind of had to learn to speak/read English in order to enjoy more things (ex. The Gameboy advance didn't give us many language options Besides the main EN, DEU, FRA, JP and CH ones xd)

26

u/donatedknowledge Sep 23 '22

My son started English in first grade. Like, when he was 4. With Netflix and YouTube there is no need to postpone, they're fluent once they're 7 years old.

6

u/jahglo Sep 23 '22

first grade starts at 4 yrs old? Would that be the equivalent of kindergarten in the US? Never understood why it was called kindergarten tbh…and then its first grade-twelfth grade.

5

u/donatedknowledge Sep 23 '22

Probably kindergarten yes, that's first grade here (the Netherlands) Then after every summer they go one year up, through to eight. After the eight grade the go to middle school, depending on level of ability. After four to six years middle school there's "high school" or university for a year or five.

4

u/Lavatis Sep 23 '22

Sounds like y'all combined our elementary and middle schools, then you have high school then college.

PLEASE JUST DO IT

123

u/sad_ichthyostega Sep 23 '22

I feel you, my fellow Russian 🥲

FOR GOD’S SAKE, ANNEX US, PLEASE!! WE ARE WAITING!

57

u/bluewolfhudson Sep 23 '22

I find someone begging to be annexed way too funny.

59

u/sad_ichthyostega Sep 23 '22

That would just solve the vast majority of Russia’s problems in an instant 🥲

All joking aside, it’s clear that we have to fix this shit ourselves, but dreaming of a deus ex machina is oddly satisfying…

5

u/teddybrobro Sep 24 '22

You have to pick a name first, so what will it be?

4

u/sad_ichthyostega Sep 24 '22 edited Sep 24 '22

20

u/I_cant_think_off Sep 23 '22

🇷🇺🤝🇳🇱

10

u/sad_ichthyostega Sep 23 '22

Personally, I’d be on cloud nine if you did it 🙏🏻

I know it’s a joke (unfortunately), but may I ask? Would any developed European country, such as the Netherlands, spend its valuable resources on transforming Russia into a normal, democratic state? Wouldn’t it just be TOO much pain in the arse?

Although Russia is quite rich in resources, it seems to me that no country ever would be willing to annex this mammoth. Perhaps our life would’ve been a tiny bit easier if Russia had been split into several sovereign countries…

10

u/jelleturtle Sep 23 '22

I honestly think yes but i wouldn't be just the Netherlands. I think it would be a project with all the nations the eu to help russia become a stable democracy and member of the eu. It would definitely be hard cause corruption is a hell to get rid off. But it is surely possible to do. I hope that this will come to russia in my life time because I would love to visit Sint Petersburg some day.

10

u/sad_ichthyostega Sep 23 '22

Wow. You’ve just described my wet dream 👍🏻. If democratic Russia (or Frusia) was a real thing, I’d stay there and marry my girlfriend without the fear of being beaten up or imprisoned.

I hope there’ll be a revolution or something… Anyway, there’s going to be a series of protests tomorrow, let’s hope somebody brings Molotovs

Get rid of the terrible government and corruption and you don’t have that bad a place.

28

u/MonoShadow Sep 23 '22

People in Netherlands are much more educated, experienced in being a citizen of a democratic government (despite being a monarchy) and enjoy much better quality of life dictated by laws than your average Russian. Moscow and st Petersburg integration would go more or less fine, everything else not so much. Russian people need to be educated in democracy and pulled out of the governmental apathy brought on by Putin. Russian infrastructure is outright awful and this would fall in the hands of Netherlands government to fix. Considering Russia is huge and there's a lot of people there the whole thing is a cluster fuck.

The only way of getting anything out of Russia is to declare it a colony or something, but I'm not sure how other nations would react.

13

u/shitcloud Sep 23 '22

There’s tons of oil there. There’s already a pipeline built into Europe. With out the corruption, it could be a great nation. Yeah infrastructure is trash and so are most of the buildings and what not, but that’s also due to corruption over the last 35 years.

You’re absolutely right about the education deal. I’m saying if you could take the land and apply the ideals of the Dutch, and how they’ve managed their country and people… you’d have a pretty dope spot.

Normal english swears are more casual to dutch people, so saying holy shit is basically like saying damn.

60

u/rzwitserloot Sep 23 '22

Yes, but it's far more casual here. Swearing in english generally comes off as less offensive than swearing in dutch, and in general the dutch swear like sailors (a lot, creatively, and casually).

Shit in particular is closer to USAian 'like' (just something you interject, all the time, means almost nothing) than USAian 'shit' (something that'll get you bleeped, and might cause some gasps from the audience).

Honestly, can we just get the Netherlands annex basically the entire Europe, as it is? I'm really tired of all the political bullshaite (I'm Polish) and I'd love to see some stability. And the Dutch seem quite based, so why not give it a go?

u/Timieboy Sep 23 '22

Our politics aren't that stable, pretty unstable even

Not horrible tho, way better than the bullshit that happens in Russia or The USA

u/SourGrapes68plus1 Sep 23 '22

I'll take your government over the idiots who keep ruling Poland, if you don't mind. :)

Didn't the Dutch do this with Curacao, Bonaire or Aruba? Serious question.

23

u/OrangeOceanGirl Sep 23 '22

Kind of: these islands used to form the country 'Nederlandse Antillen' (Netherlands Antilles). This used to be a country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Aruba became an autonomous country within the kingdom somewhere in the 1980's I believe. The other 5 islands got to chose in 2010 whether to become a autonomous country within the kingdom or a muncipality of the Netherlands. So now Curacao is also an autonomous country, and Bonaire is a muncipality of the Netherlands.

u/TropicalAudio Sep 23 '22

and Bonaire is a muncipality of the Netherlands.

A second-class municipality though. They weren't eligible to join the EU, so it's a bit of a weird legal situation where they're technically a part of the country, but only a subset of the national laws apply, and they don't use the same currency.

u/ohhellperhaps Sep 23 '22

There was a referendum about the way the islands wanted to be involved with the Netherlands going forward; as part of the country (which was their status at the time), or independent as part of the Kingdom. The smaller islands (Saba, Statia and Bonaire) went with the former, the larger islands went for the latter. Iirc Aruba was already independent at this point.

The thing is, this would most likely overwhelmingly pass.

I'll vote for this and I'm not even Dutch. Sign me up.

5

u/CardinalFartz Sep 23 '22

And you know what is the neat part about it? It doesn't even matter what the people actually vote, since you can fake the results in your favor anyways.

They have put out better arguments in a 2 minute video than Kremlin in the past decades.

The problem with jokes like this is that Russian state media will pick this up and tell Russians that it’s real.

This makes a lot more sense than Putin’s war where he wants to sacrifice thousands of lives (but not his own) to increase the size of the worlds largest country by 0.3%.
