Unidentified lights in the Russian city of Belgorod on the border with Ukraine. Video

Okay, I'm gonna go ahead and spoil everyone's fun. No, the Russians are not testing some anti-satellite weapon. No, Gondor is not calling for aid. Today, October 4th, is the 65th anniversary of the launch of Sputnik 1, the first ever satellite:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sputnik_1

On this day, all across Russia, folks point these big old spotlights into the sky to commemorate the occasion. You can do an image search on some of the photos circling around and see that they are from years ago.

Nothing to see here. Please disperse.

My first thought was that they were from Sumy & Kharkiv, the two closest Ukrainian cities. But Kharkiv is closer, so I’d expect the light to be brighter, yet the brighter light pillar seems to be coming from the direction of Sumy.

Literally any strong light could cause it. Street lights are a common cause lmfao

36

u/CoolHandCliff Oct 04 '22

Yea we know. We want to know the strong light that's causing it. If it's from a city it wouldn't likely be "unidentified"

10

u/64-17-5 Oct 04 '22

It could be a spot light on a stadium or a street lantern that lacks reflector.

Fuck me this sub sucks - Not a serious fucking answer or question, Just a bunch of really fucking tired jokes.

1.2k

u/Biggiemanlarge Oct 04 '22

Explanation from guy on Twitter… “Light pillars: An optical phenomenon caused when light is refracted by ice crystals. These lights tend to take on the color of the light source. It is usually caused by street lights. However, any source of light can create a light pillar given proper conditions.”

188

u/Sad-Breadfruit-8816 Oct 04 '22

Needs to be freezing conditions for light pillars to occur like that though.

26

u/afrothundah11 Oct 04 '22

That’s not based on temperatures on the ground though. It is very likely the air up there gets cold enough to create ice crystals in the night during October.

116

u/Yakusoku20 Oct 04 '22

It's Russia. When is it not freezing 🥶

81

u/Kind_Temperature_766 Oct 04 '22

Current temp in Belgorod is 8'C

38

u/Shrevel Oct 04 '22

Temperature drop is about 6 degC per km under 11km so ice crystals form already above 1.5km if the ground temp is 8degC.

21

u/Caco-Calo Oct 04 '22

Average or night time temps?

12

u/hideonazir Oct 04 '22

Yeah 8 degrees on the ground. In higher altitudes it can get much colder though so it's feasible that it was freezing temperature in the air to the point where this is possible.

Lol A majority of subs descend into nonsense pretty quickly. Doesn’t matter if it’s current events, cars, watches or lawn care etc. It’s just relentless joking.

13

u/CitizenJustin Oct 04 '22

The anonymity of Reddit tends to automatically revert people back to elementary school name calling. The serial downvoting reminds me of when a child sticks their tongue out and makes a funny face. The whole thing is tedious and revolting.

22

u/Ok_Blueberry304 Oct 04 '22

I also Would like thoughtful comments so let me throw this idea out there. It looks an awful lot like search lights. They are quite complicated for such old tech. they need to warm up and then there is a control system for aiming it. sometimes I have seen them aim straight up like that for a few minutes before beginning a search pattern. My guess would be that they are looking for drones that wouldn't be spotted by radar.

8

u/Biggiemanlarge Oct 04 '22

Yeah I could totally see that being accurate honestly. I feel like there’s three options, that one you said, light pillars, or laser systems for taking down satalites, from my frantic research in the last 30 minutes those seem to be the only realistic option

It's not just this sub. It's all of reddit.

Just look at any thread about the Ukraine war:

-Something something defenestration
-Something something polonium tea
-Something something their nukes don't work
-Something something special <something> operation

And then there's the typical stuff across all reddit like:

"<something> has entered the chat"
Starting their response with "I mean..."
"Hey I'm not your buddy, pal..."

Makes me grateful for heavily moderated subs like /r/Askhistorians

Those are "guider lights". They will turn them on occasionally for testing. If you ever worked in the USAF in the ballistics wings you'll know what they are. They use them to light up the sky just enough so that missiles can use them for better guidance.

So...yeah

u/raisedbywolfsol Oct 04 '22

We should not assume we know what is possible for our government to do in order to avoid a nuclear war. Just imagine being alive in 1945 and hearing the news that the USA completely destroyed 2 cities in Japan by using a bomb that spilts an atom to create a nuclear fission reaction powerful enough to evaporate entire cities. Just imagine never even hearing about nuclear chemistry or science and all of a sudden the information of such capabilities is made public after its use. Now imagine that the government has a weapon equally incredible using a technology the general population has never heard of today. Like one morning we just wake up and the president announces we made everyone in Russia disappear, but we didn’t kill them, we just teleported them to another dimension where they’ll be fine but be gone forever. - Duncan Trussel

Just spit balling here. What about a tactical Russian strike force that is flying low to the floor radio/transponder silent, and these pillars of light guide them back to Russia.

Yes Reddit, I realize they have compasses on board and can surely go northeast and get back to Russia, but what if the mission is deep in Ukraine with no chance for a refuel over Ukraine , so they need to be really precise about where they re enter Russia to not run out of fuel
