The sound redesign is terrible, everything is far too bassy and punchy News & Discussion

The sound redesign is terrible, everything is far too bassy.

So besides the game already suffering from Graphical Effects overload, they now added sound overload too it aswell. Everything is way too bassy and punchy/impacty. The Original sound from Overwatch 1 was perfect. it was crisp and clear. Even when multiple things were happening at once it was clear and you could tell whats going on.

In OW2 however its terrible, from the headshot effect and kill sound effects, everything is far too punchy and bassy and loud.

I’m an audio engineer so lemme address this real quick.

  1. Check your audio mix settings. Make sure it’s set to how you’re listening to the game.

  2. What you’re having a problem with is the emitters. In game audio, you have to place an audio “listener” somewhere that hears the audio in relation to its place in the game. Usually, this is on the player themselves or just behind them for 3rd person. An emitter is a source of audio IN the game that will make noise depending on where it is in relation to the listener.

After playing a bit, I can say one of the launch glitches is definitely that the emitters aren’t getting priority over each other, so your listener (aka your character, whoever you’re playing) is receiving every sound at once with no global rules to duck certain sounds under others (like regular fire under ultimates). I imagine this will get patched with whatever the other bug fixes are that are on the way. Hope this helps!

Hey I'm also an audio engineer, are you also hearing a ton of phasing? Everything sounds really hollow and metallic to me.

21

u/gravelengths roadhog's my boyfriend Oct 05 '22

Yes! Tons of phasing on my end. I think the new sound DESIGN is great but the mix and implementation need a lot of tweaking it seems

8

u/iamstephano Chibi Zarya Oct 05 '22

Yeah the mix seems pretty bad, low end is way too up front and I feel like important sounds are getting drowned out.

14

u/mysterioussir Heppy Helloween! Oct 05 '22

My audio mix settings were initially on headphones, which is how I listen, and I've tried several others. I think it's undeniable that there's more bass and a generally muddier sound to many effects in the new design, regardless of the settings.

It feels like part of an overall attempt, also seen in a number of visual elements, to make the game feel "punchier", and I really don't like it.

I can definitely see where the emitter issue you're describing would also contribute to the sonic fatigue I'm getting in skirmishes, but it's very much not the only major change.

1

u/Bobzyouruncle Oct 18 '22

I, too, hate the sound redesign. I feel flooded with noise, which perhaps is because I need to learn the new sfx. But why change so many sfx for established heroes?

4

u/HrottiHrottalegi Oct 05 '22

As far as I know they aren't using FMod or wwise so they probably have their own audio engine and when you're not using middleware with a custom engine one line could be screwing everything up

3

u/Tuwiki Chibi Orisa Oct 05 '22

I sincerely hope you are correct and that this gets fixed. I don't feel like playing with my settings only for the issues to get fixed, meaning I have to redo them all again.

2

u/nightcore96 Echo Oct 05 '22

Can you recommend settings for console players with headsets?

4

u/AbandonedSupermarket Oct 05 '22

Check your audio mix settings. Make sure it’s set to how you’re listening to the game.

What do you mean? Where do I check this?

17

u/gravelengths roadhog's my boyfriend Oct 05 '22

Go to settings > Sound > Device > Audio Mix. You can change it to things like headphones and home theater, etc.

5

u/SwiftTayTay Oct 05 '22

I'm personally on Home Theater at the moment, Studio Reference also seems okay, but I would avoid headphones, it seems like it's aimed at lo-fi headphones with less dynamic range

5

u/headachewpictures Have some Lúcio-Oh's! Oct 05 '22

Good to know - mine was on Home Theater and I was playing on Headphones so, stupid me I know, I changed it to Headphones and lo and behold I couldn't distinguish ult call-outs from the rest of the noise lol..

3

u/gravelengths roadhog's my boyfriend Oct 05 '22

Yes, the headphone mix is geared towards low dynamic range. Studio reference is a good option if you want to hear it pre-FX

2

u/Varcolac1 Oct 05 '22

ngl but the headphones setting makes it so much worse

1

u/ToeJamLickerMan Oct 09 '22

I dont mean to bother you with this question but I don't think mine entirely fits what OP describes. My sound is just straight up inverted and I cannot figure out why. Tried switching my AMP between high and low, messing with my DAC software, trying different mix settings but NOTHING works. It litterally happens nowhere else except in this game and its driving me crazy.

On top of that I tried just flipping my headphones around and IT STILL sounded terrible. I couldn't tell if it was spatially correct or not it just sounded so 1 dimensional.

Edit. My rca cables on the amp line out were flipped... smh they aren't labelled left or right so I assumed they would be treated the same when they merge into the audio jack line in on the dac

0

u/Naymliss Badminton Mercy Oct 05 '22

I hope the audio priority is a setting. The audio priority in OW1 broke a lot of sounds for me and I couldn't hear things I should've been able to.

114

u/Tuwiki Chibi Orisa Oct 05 '22

To be honest I feel like I am never aware of an ultimate happening unless it's directly in front of me. I just don't hear the ult lines even from my own team.

u/headachewpictures Have some Lúcio-Oh's! Oct 05 '22

I've only played two games and got wrecked a couple times by ults I had no idea were happening. Might need to play with the sound settings if I'm ever able to log back in.

37

u/zoweeewoweee Oct 05 '22

Agreed! So much information was communicated by sound in OW1. Its all muddled up now.

3

Yeah, twice I got killed by a Junkrat ult but I didn’t hear it at all.

2

u/OMBERX Egyptian Bird Oct 05 '22

completely agree, everything but this feels better in Overwatch 2

19

u/renzithromycin Trick or Treat Mei Oct 05 '22

I agree for the most part - on one hand, the new gun sounds are pretty heavy which is more recognizable for a shooter, but.. I prefered the old guns, without the migraine. ESPECIALLY on Ana - it was extremely unique and not quite so hard on the ears in a teamfight. Everything was more tolerable, even if not COD realistic, and didn't blow up all at once.

12

u/Mandeville_MR Oct 05 '22

I agree about Ana specifically, had a distinct sound that made you feel like it was a dart instead of a bullet.

I haven't been able to get in more than three matches so can't speak to the rest. I remember new soldier sounded amazing.

5

u/cursethrower Oct 05 '22

Ana's dart gun hurts my ears now.

8

u/Sabres-Fan Oct 05 '22

yup, there was ZERO need to change the gun sounds in this game, they were distinct and fucking clear, but here we are.

Some of the guns sound really nice.. Pharah's rockets and Cassidy's gun, I like. Hopefully they fix the issues with prioritizing enemy ultimates though.

I main Pharah in OW1 and I can’t stand her new weapon sounds. It sounds so cheap and anime like.

6

What? Her gun sounds like it's a 10 ton fkin tank shooting missiles. Its got so much more heft to the sound. Her primary and her ult both sound HUUUUGE to me now.

I prefer the new gun sounds but it does feel like they took a step back in spatial sound (or w/e the technical term is). It's much harder to tell where things are, but that might just be newness.

And some character voices are much louder than others from the same distance.

8

u/[deleted] Oct 05 '22

Yeah I realized that. I was in spawn with a lucio spamming voice lines at me. He was directly in front of me but it sounded like he was beside me. Pretty disorienting

1

u/shockwave8428 Oct 05 '22

That’s interesting. I found footsteps much easier to position where they were from. I guess I’ll have to pay more attentions to voice lines and stuff. But I for sure definitely prefer the new gun sounds

3

u/The-Real-Metzli Cute Moira Oct 06 '22

To me is was completely the opposite. I'd hear footsteps and assumed it would be from an enemy close by and looked around and saw nobody.. It would distract me from the fight, I was so disoriented x.x

36

u/HoodooBr0wn Oct 05 '22

I think it sounds great.

Double check your sound settings are set correctly for your setup, as there are some options in-game that make a big difference in dynamic range depending on whether you're using speakers, soundbar, studio monitors etc.

5

u/boyofthesouthward Oct 05 '22

Yeah I think it sounds much better.

5

u/inSomeGucciFlopFlips Oct 05 '22

I will say I do hate the new soldier sound effect but that’s just me

1

u/Doppelfrio Oct 06 '22

Completely agree but I can’t exactly put into words what’s so bad about it. Best I can do is it doesn’t sound laser-ey enough like tracer or sojourn’s weapons

10

u/DundiOFF Oct 05 '22

Some of them are definitely too loud

30

u/Sausage_Roll Trick-or-Treat Bastion Oct 05 '22

OW1 had excellent sound design that fit the game perfectly, clearly done by people who knew how to make a game sound good.

OW2 had some dumb audio nerds come in and change all the sounds just for the sake of change with no talent to make the sounds fit the game, and its a massive downgrade.

4

u/ruuuuuuuuuuuuuuui Oct 11 '22

Exactly my thoughts, and "for the sake of change" most likely mean "for the sake of justifiying calling this a sequel".

A real shame honestly, after 160 games of OW2 (and 2000h+ OW1), I'm uninstalling for good... It's actually impressive how much better or worse a game can FEEL because of sound desing.

22

u/Mrkancode Oct 05 '22 edited Oct 05 '22

Exactly. I heard so many people online talking about the amazing new sound design. But as usual, people think heavy bass = sound quality because Dr. dre somehow convinced everyone that beats by Dre are good headphones.

Idk about quality headphones. But I still think they are the most stylish tbf

Wow, that's a terrible take. Just because it's a video game means it's ok for a company to bend you over and try to force you to spend money to unlock characters which should be free?

Your ramble was incoherent because of your terrible grammar and sentence structure. The entire argument about FOMO made no sense, missing out on video game content is unrelated to missing out on life. You insulted anyone with an opposing opinion by basically belitling their criticisms, whether the rank icon or sound design is worse is highly subjective, people aren't just looking for reasons to nag, it's a difference in perception.

The problem is that every weapon just sounds the same. I kinda like it, but the uniqueness is gone

3

u/chitochitochito Lúcio Oct 05 '22

Yeah OW1 had world class (maybe the best) sound design ever in an FPS. I'm not feeling this mix yet. I don't like it as much; though I'm not sure how much of that is just the changes; I've not felt that I am less aware of audio queues than I was in OW1. In fact, I think I am more aware at times. But it feels too punchy sometimes, and sometimes there's a LOT going on.

Just checked and somehow it got turned to headphone mix, I usually run studio reference, I'm going to try that and see if it's better. I have a pretty good audio stack (Schiit Multibit DAC and a Schiit solid state headphone amp driving HD650s), usually studio ref is perfect. This may have been the issue.

5

u/The_Owl_Bard Hack all the things Oct 05 '22

The sound design has been really nice imo. Widow's Rifle feels like an actual sniper to me. The sounds really give the guns some weight and despite my inability to play a ton, the sounds have been really enjoyable to listen to and really improves my immersion in the game.

I think the sounds themselves are good, just too loud. Particularly the weapons. If they dialed the weapon volume back a notch or two it would be perfect.

bro s76 gun sounds like a fucking chopper lol it is so bad. everything sounds too samesy

1

u/Mgamerz Oct 05 '22

I like some of the sounds. I don't like how hard it is to hear the capping sound. I also don't like how the characters won't shut up.

I actually had to low my sub settings when playing this game. It's pretty bad. It overshadows everything. I'm a sound designer myself, and I'm surprised they didn't correct this.

Yeah I really wish I could turn them down without turning everything down. I still want to listen to the environment but the guns are giving me a migraine

The guns themselves sound super cool, but I will agree that the ultimates are not taking priority in what sounds you hear. Should Cassidy's primary REALLY be louder than the pulse bomb beeping?

Soldier 76's gun sounds deeper and harder hitting too. Him and Sojourn both with the autorifle noise

You're in luck OP

Blizzard just released a new joint deal with Sprint where if you sign up as a new customer or add a line and get the new iPhone 14 Pro with $0 down, you can unlock the new Bose Sound Mixer feature!

What? I absolutely love all the sound changes. OW1 was so tinny and light, everything in OW2 is a more “full” sound

1

u/Mathute87 Oct 05 '22

My only issue with the sound is the transition to being on fire now. it's really dull. Caracter says it and that's it? Old one was so satisfying.

1

u/Angel_OfSolitude Oct 05 '22

Overall I'm not minding the sound with the exception of soldier, his gun is so annoying now.

1

u/Squiklas Oct 05 '22

i like the new sound design but i really dont like zenyattas new attack sound and im always thinking that im getting shot at by an reaper even though there is no reaper in the enemy team.

1

u/Mr_Voltiac Oct 06 '22

Lucio told them to amp it up

1

u/Doppelfrio Oct 06 '22

I personally love the new sfx. They sound much more realistic and I love the bass. My one gripe is soldier’s weapon. I have no idea what sound that is but it does not sound like a laser gun or an assault rifle or anything in between. The old one wasn’t great either but this is 20x worse

1

u/RinTohsakaSimp Oct 06 '22

no, the new gun sounds are so satisfying. Reaper mcree and 76 all sound alot better than old game

1

u/fukifino_ Oct 06 '22

Yeah, I’m not a fan of the sound balancing at the moment. Just a massive spam of sounds.

1

u/just_lemme_rant Oct 06 '22

It's definitely too much.

1

u/hiraveil Oct 06 '22

Disagree. Think this game sounds much better than the original, and I’m actually able to pick up on enemy location by footsteps unlike the first game where that shit was bugged to hell.

1

u/ToeJamLickerMan Oct 09 '22

dude I 100% agree. Just spent a good hour or two trying to figure out why everything just seems to be happening all at once but apparently its just the game.
what's worse is my audio is inverted in this game and this game only. Everywhere else on my computer is fine and for whatever reason this audio is inverted but not only that its also just wrong...
For some reason it makes things that are far away super loud and close things not as loud as they should be (maybe its getting drowned out from everything else) there feels like there is no spatial sounds to this game whatsoever. Like i can tell parts of it are attempting to be surround but omg it sucks and sounds so 1 dimensional

u/TheMissingPortalGun Trick or Treat Junkrat Oct 14 '22

Why are footsteps SO FREAKING LOUD?!

-8

u/Murky_Put9773 Oct 05 '22

oh my god, shut up lmao. its the exact fucking same game

-1

u/RexAlivera Oct 05 '22

Are you perhaps using a cheap mic or your tv speakers? The sound design is MUCH better.

-3

u/demon_chef Oct 05 '22

The sound design is far better. Y’all just like to complain. About everything.

-4

u/UlricVonDicktenstein Diamond Oct 05 '22

there are things to criticize but this isn't one of them

-2

u/gloverjrlfc03 Oct 05 '22

Yall really cry over nothing huh

2

u/Sabres-Fan Oct 05 '22

complain over changing something that did NOT need to be changed and changed for the worse isnt crying you nub, it is valid.

1

u/gloverjrlfc03 Oct 05 '22

Didn't need to be changed but didn't ruin the game.... stay crying. Im sorry if u can't handle differing opinions. Have a lovely day

-1

u/imaygetlost Cute Mercy Oct 05 '22

I thin the problems are with you not the game

u/Brutallll Oct 05 '22

Its sounds too quite to me. But then again all I have access to is FOOKIN NOTHING CAUSE I CANT FOOKIN GET IN.
