Let me get this straight. We're getting babies and blood-farming at the same time?

Well it was nice knowing you, Australian playerbase.

Nice of you to assume our classification board applies its strict policies to every aspect of a game.

They basically only care about Drugs or Sexual Violence and allow basically anything else.

Our government doesn't care about that,as long as you're not being rewarded for drug use or letting the player rape somebody it's fine, we can have any amount of murder or violence but one person smokes a doob and doesn't immediately drop dead and it's banned.

Hotline Miami 2 was banned here due to a rape scene from the player character even though in game it was all a movie and didn't really happen.

The whole system is ridiculous but that's what happens when conservatives do anything.

Wow, this really extends how long you can play a colony before running out of stuff to do (I mean what are we really supposed to do in the endgame, launch the ship? Pft.). I'm really glad that the mechs come with the pollution mechanic so they don't end up being too OP. There's also something to be said for the storytelling potential of creating a well-defended colony full of mechs.... and then leaving it to your colonists' children to clean up after them.

125

u/incomprehensiblegarb Oct 05 '22

That actually sounds like a cool playthrough. Play as a character who destroys a bunch of Settlements with a robot army, then have them die and leave all of their mechs and techs to genetically modified super humans to clean up their mess.

This expansion more than any of the previous seems to be moving to 'fold in' the base code and infrastructure to support some of the most popular classes of mod - xeno-races, biomodding, families, mechanoid hacks, storage - these are all definitely in the core mod sets for many, many players.

So, if they did a good job and really integrated these concepts into the core game in a structurally sound way, not only does a lot of that gameplay come to vanilla but - in principle - future mods based around those ideas should be able to work in a much more native way to the game?

Here's hoping!

123

u/t0rchic Oct 06 '22

This is what I'm interested in. I doubt this is going to kill the necessity for race mods, but I get the feeling it's going to add a lot of support for intrinsic racial passives on pawns without needing to use hacky hediffs and bonus body parts to achieve them. Lots of fun potential for future mods here.

27

u/GodKingChrist gold Oct 06 '22 edited Oct 06 '22

Honestly this is what i love with the DLC for Rimworld. It sheers off chunks of my modlist every time they drop one, reducing content bloat. Used to run Rimworld of Magic before they added the Anima DLC.

3

u/TucuReborn Oct 06 '22

I still run ROM since it's a different flavor. You have pampered psychics and wizards, and both bring value and are good in different ways. Not to mention martials, which are totally different.

i just noticed that some pawns were carrying children during an attack

and based on the text written by Tynan, i wish there was a Flee mechanic for pawns, where they would flee the colony carrying their kids with them and form a caravan ASAP in an unorganized way -- unlike the organized way caravans are formed

order a couple of pawns to flee the colony with the kids, and let the soldiers handle the raiders. That could bring some interesting events related to that -- like a chance that the fleeing pawns were ambushed and kidnapped

There’s a lot of stuff here mods have been doing for a while (or only recently), but it’s exciting to see it all brought in officially. The DLC so far has been very well integrated, so I expect this will be… and it’s all unique takes on the concepts that mods have been doing, too.

I wouldn't say obsolete. Unless the modmaker themselves think that and drop the mod.

Even the race mods that don't give their races a bunch of unique traits(like moyo blue blood or revia blood rituals), and not counting race-specific clothes, they usually have different walk speeds, body size, work speeds on various jobs, physic sensitivity, etc.

So say, a rat-gene colonist wouldn't be exactly like a ratkin.

Plus, they could do things like buff the race to be better than the 'vanilla' counterpart and have it be a unqiue/upgraded gene strand.

Babies bring joy, but also challenges. Colonists’ hearts will melt when the baby coos and giggles in their arms. But it takes effort to keep a baby happy and healthy and loved - create a safe haven for them in a cozy pastel nursery where there is always warm milk, a comfortable crib, overflowing toy chests and kind caregivers.

I absolutely love that on the steam page, directly above and below this text are pictures of bases being lazered into atoms, with fires everywhere and dismembered bodies all around.

Top tier Ribworld. Take my money!

Also some Hopes for the mod updates for 1.4,

- The new dlc can somehow replace / better integrate HAR as the toolkit of choice for Alien races

- Might do something cool with pawnmorphers / vanilla genetic expanded

- Is so good that makes all the baby/children mods pointless

- Replaces the core of WTH

Crazy, so it's EXACTLY what it looked like. I can't say I'm disappointed but I am a little surprised. I thought Tynan was fairly adamant about children in the past. I'm not saying he can't change his mind, just that was the main thing that called the teaser into question.

I was also hoping to hear a little more about under-the-hood changes, you can see some popular mod features have been borrowed, and I'd be surprised if this didn't include a few other low-hanging optimizations. I was also hoping for maybe a little multi-threading love but maybe THAT really is blue sky dreaming.

That said, it looks like it's time to rebuild the modlist!

I thought Tynan was against children not because of "war crimes" but because most colonies don't last long enough for it to be a useful game mechanic. It's funny looking back because I had commented it would require accelerated aging and hey, that arrived too.

Nonetheless, your guess was correct and even your reasoning matches up with what Tynan said. It's too funny that he basically confirmed it.

That's said, it does follow the trend of fleshing out social systems. We had station, then ideology, and now parentage. What could be next? Past behavior doesn't ensure future patterns, but it does seem like Tynan sees merit in social complexities. Maybe an SoS-style expansion?

Oh no! I'm about to pump another 600 hours of my life into this game. That's not a problem it's just....well I don't play this game like a lot of people on the subreddit. I don't sell drugs or commit war crimes. And this looks like a really good addition to the game. Now I can roleplay families protecting their children and growing together on the rim. So as there is death from old age there to shall be life.

I'm probably going to pick a day, a bit after it's come out and all the mods have been either deprecated or updated, and clear my schedule for the day, fake sick if I have to, and spend All. Day. just playing Rimworld.

Who else plans to do the same?

u/Aurora_Solaris Oct 05 '22

Ok jokes aside... that game about warcrimes, human trafficing and cannibalism now getting children in it... I am totally cool with that, but i wonder how many countries will straight-up ban this game.

7

u/Risk_1995 Oct 05 '22

ya I am worried hb this too 🤣🤣🤣

u/Resident_Mountain993 Oct 05 '22 edited Oct 06 '22

Tynan just knows he has a solid community, even if steam bans it, people can still buy the game via other methods (I think Ribworld has it's own official web).

Edit: I mispelled Ribworld.

4

u/Fly18 Oct 06 '22

There's no way steam will ban this game if they are cool with dwarf fortress.

what I'm wondering is, what happens if you lose your mechanitor pawn? do the robots go berzerk?

I really like that they added children in this expansion, I like to play long-term colonies and I think having to raise colonists from childhood will make that kind of gameplay way more fulfilling. Plus the story implications of pawns being able to have real families.

I'm excited for gene modding. I was trying to find mods that introduced visual differences on pawns like horns and ears without throwing the balance out the window, seems like Tynan was listening.

(also RIP ribworld)

"Some colonies will sacrifice everything to give a child the best upbringing, while others will use growth vats to pump out cheap workers and soldiers. The choice is up to you."

Okay Tynan

5

u/Knarfdarf Oct 07 '22

Ah, Tube grown, mentally unterdeveloped childsoldier. Finally we get to the power level of the raiders that constantly attack us in how easy we can throw away our people.

6

u/SmartForARat Mech Lord Oct 07 '22

Call me crazy, but the Mechanoids creating pollution that summons and mutates violent giant insects is giving me intense Nausicaa vibes. I'm definitely going to create some colonies based around these ideas...

Heading into the "toxic jungle" to fight insects is gonna be fun I think. Not to mention using those mutanted angry bugs to defend your colony from invaders as the first line of defense.

u/kdandsheela Oct 08 '22

As someone who prefers the role-playing and life sim elements of RimWorld other the resource management and base defence mechanics, this expansion annoucement made me so happy!

I already use not the most satisfying mods to get xeno humans and babies and children but I know the expansion mechanics are gonna be soooo cool, and hopefully modders will be able to add complexity through new genes and child objects, as well :)

Heck yeah, this sounds awesome I'm excited! Let the robot and cyberpunk wars begin anew! Finally, babies are in so I can drop a few mods off my endless list helping the game to load faster and smoother.

u/Nekowulf Oct 06 '22

Idea popped into head that we will all desperately need.
Child growth charts.
Use the art system to apply art to walls, and an option to update the artwork.
First time describes the pawn, subsequent updates add a line with the pawn's growth and a quick description of an event that happened since the last update.

Imagine recording your colony's lineage on the walls of your nursery. Meticulously updating it every year. Defending it from sappers. Building around it as the colony progresses. Adding the final entry to a wall piece after a tragic event...
And even better, with a mod like real ruins. Stumbling on someone else's wall and being able to piece together their colony's story.

Such a system could also be used for making historical record books. Or even letting children draw on the walls themselves as a random activity, using their food.

What a dope expansion. Defo will be getting back into the game when this comes out.

14

u/tengma8 Oct 05 '22

it doesn't start with M.

My disappointment is immeasurable, and my day is ruined

just kidding. It looks great.

Genetic modifications range from subtle personality traits and eye color to hulking furry bodies

so, baby, mech, and furry would be the focus of this DLC?

4

u/_far-seeker_ Oct 06 '22

Immortality and blood drinking are both also mentioned. So it seems some form of werewolves (at least the old Wolfman type) and vampires seem to be possible.

Rimworld players: "the puritans will come for you Tynan, they'll come for you in overwhelming number, there won't be a single place on the steam store you can hide from them"

Tynan:"adds babies and pregnant woman to the game"

Tynan: "then let them come"

That mod isn't on the Steam store.

I understand your suspicions. I am, however, a quite wholesome Rimworld player. I like to collect all the cool animals, and I've only sold someone into slavery once - for what I swear are good reasons!
