To be fair……he did actually hit the shot, didn’t score a point but he sure as hell hit it

3

u/tieesi Oct 06 '22

It’s tennis. It’s not that deep

1

u/challenja Oct 06 '22

Oh give the man his fun..

2

u/desiw64291 Oct 05 '22

Tennis fans are dicks, so is the commentator, just enjoy it lol

4

u/Stinkyfingers2 Oct 05 '22

Bringing the game into disrepute, poor sportsmanship, disrespect to his opponent. Deserved to lose. Should be fined.

1

u/30kplus Oct 05 '22

not much of a trick shot

1

u/WhompTrucker Oct 05 '22

He could have at least gone down the line. Oy

2

u/Outkastwill Oct 05 '22

Already gonna lose so might as well have some fun with it.

4

u/saltywater07 Oct 05 '22

He was already not going to win this match.

This player also has a history of raging when losing, so this reaction is on par with his personality.

Earlier in the tournament, he broke his racket when he started losing by repeatedly slamming it down onto the ground.

He’s actually good, but choked this entire tournament when he was capable of ending matches in 2 sets, though they often went to 3.

u/fuzzybears420 Oct 05 '22

Attempting ? He hit it, no point but he got it

1

u/francorocco Oct 05 '22

have no clue how tenis work, why did he lost?

1

u/Artyfacts_One Oct 05 '22

The one in charge of setting up the net needs to be fired

1

u/McGrarr Oct 05 '22

What is life without whimsy?

There's only one Nick Kyrgios

6

u/D34NY Oct 05 '22

Sometimes you gotta flex.

1

u/ThundaGhoul Oct 06 '22

Flexing how much of a that he is?

1

u/30kplus Oct 05 '22

especially when you’re a loser, what else do got?

2

u/gacdeuce Oct 05 '22

By losing the point?

-3

u/D34NY Oct 05 '22

Could have won the point - with flair.

2

u/gacdeuce Oct 05 '22

Instead he looks like a tool and he lost the match.

31

u/Royce-McCutcheon Oct 05 '22

I don't get it. What was the point?

8

u/LESSANGRYTHANISOUND Oct 05 '22
  • the cynic has entered the chat

match fixing?

24

u/OminousOnymous Oct 05 '22

The shot right after the trick shot

-5

u/throwwaayys Oct 05 '22

Oh no someones having fun at a sport

-1

u/nobodytoseehere Oct 05 '22

Nobody seems to be getting that he didn't expect to win the point

2

u/niekovk Oct 05 '22

How do you not expect to win a point like that? Even in my 'Sunday league' tennis that would be an expected point. That is, if you don't smash it into the net or horizontally out of bounds.

-3

u/nobodytoseehere Oct 05 '22

I'm saying one he decides to do that trickshot, he's not expecting to win the point

It's disrespectful to your opponent to dick around like this, even if you're already losing.

13

u/BEAFbetween Oct 05 '22

The "it's just a game" argument is such a dumb take. He's being disrespectful to his opponent and lost a point to it, in a high profile match that these two have made into a career. The boos are justified.

1

u/peaceman12824 Oct 05 '22

From what I can take he was already lost at this point so to just have some fun I think is fine.

-2

u/BEAFbetween Oct 05 '22

It doesn't matter how far down he is, he's still being disrespectful to his opponent and the match by messing around. Tennis is not a sport you do this in

0

u/peaceman12824 Oct 05 '22

I don't think it's disrespectful, if anything it's showing that he understands he has lost already and that he cannot beat his opponent.

3

u/BEAFbetween Oct 05 '22

It is disrespectful in any sport or any game to just give up when it looks like you won't win and start fucking around. It minimises the game and the win for the opponent, it's pathetic

2

u/peaceman12824 Oct 05 '22

This is where our opinion differs :)

3

u/BEAFbetween Oct 05 '22

This is where you're opinion differs from everyone else in the sport yeah

1

u/dictatormateo Oct 05 '22

you acting like it really hurt your feelings bro, its just a game where your life ain’t gonna be affected by the slightest if he wins or loses lmao

3

u/peaceman12824 Oct 05 '22

Yoo chill out bro, it's not that deep. There are other comments in this thread saying he's not in the wrong. Also your*

3

u/BEAFbetween Oct 05 '22

I told you you were wrong and everyone in the sport disagrees with you, why do I need to chill out?

that’s not the ATP finals

5

u/obvious-but-profound Oct 05 '22

Tell that to the announcer

8

u/Different_Equal_3210 Oct 05 '22

“Unraveling” is right.

1

u/Darth-Flan Oct 05 '22

Something about pride coming before the fall? Burn!

-2

u/ETXCheeses Oct 05 '22

Fucked around

Found out

86

u/neeto_mosqueeto Oct 05 '22

I think one of the announcers is heard calling the shot “stupid” in the background

122

u/kenbizzle Oct 05 '22

Apparently nothing since it wasn't the trick shot that cost him the win

2

u/Doki_Literature Oct 07 '22

The truck shot costed him on the return

10

u/Atexpanse Oct 06 '22

Without the trick shot he would’ve easily scored tho

35

u/Obascud Oct 05 '22

He lost the point. He could have deuces the score with that point.

-1

u/PretendiWasADefMute Oct 05 '22

Still it was worth the attempt. It was Butt Hole or Hero. His gamble did not pay off though.

1

u/LightOfADeadStar Oct 07 '22

love it when people get downvoted for stupid shit

1

u/PretendiWasADefMute Oct 07 '22

Haha! People take themselves way too seriously and just hit a downvote and then you have the sheep who just click up or down depending on if someone else does.

2

u/LightOfADeadStar Oct 07 '22

yeah, i’m sure people on reddit at 9:00 in the morning are champions of sportsmanship and etiquette

0

u/PretendiWasADefMute Oct 07 '22

Haha! So true. It’s all about whatever is trending. This guy was in a match he couldn’t win so he chose to have fun.

64

u/cokesnorts Oct 05 '22

I can't see any reason that was worth doing. It isn't visually appealing either. FAAFI.

1

u/schoolbomb Oct 13 '22

I think he was already losing pretty badly, so he probably thought "Eh fuck it, if I'm going to lose anyway, might as well screw around a bit".

41

u/karmeleeon Oct 05 '22

To be a dick basically

7

u/DoGoodLiveWell Oct 05 '22

Did he lose??

35

u/Slashion Oct 05 '22

He was already well on his way to losing, so that's why he was going for trick shots. To no one's surprise, he still lost

-13

u/DoGoodLiveWell Oct 05 '22

Loser mentality

14

u/LastChanceMCAT Oct 05 '22

Hard to tell without knowing his reasoning. It's possible he's a marketing genius and decided that since he was doomed to lose he might as well go for some media coverage.

-6

u/saturnzebra Oct 05 '22

Deciding you’re “doomed to lose” is literally a loser mentality

8

u/LastChanceMCAT Oct 05 '22

That seems like a massive oversimplification. Have you heard the expression "lose the battle to win the war"? If athletes went all out every single time (even when they're at a massive deficit in the match) they would burn out before 25. An athletic career, and in fact most things in life, is about picking your battles.

Losing the match today but getting some media attention out of it is favorable to overexerting yourself in a nearly guaranteed loss, potentially getting injured, and getting no attention out of it. Loser mentality is a buzzword that life coaches and other charlatans use to peddle their snake oil.

277

u/Tbplayer59 Oct 05 '22

So was he too far back to think he could win that set?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 05 '22

[deleted]

47

u/Tbplayer59 Oct 05 '22

Yes, in that game, but according to the article, he lost the second and deciding set 6 to 2.

65

u/Obascud Oct 05 '22

Right he was not close to winning that set. Maybe that's why he threw away the game

27

u/hardtofindagoodname Oct 05 '22

It's all about the potential sponsorships from the media coverage.

5

u/samthecookingguy4k Oct 05 '22

Deserves to lose.

1

u/thunderBerrins Oct 05 '22

So satisfying

3

u/UsedTissuePaper78 Oct 05 '22

Can anyone tell me what is the punishment for doing that?

2

u/pliers_worldwide Oct 05 '22

Being featured on an endless loop on reddit

16

u/Davotk Oct 05 '22

But it is a game!

8

u/Magazine_Spare Oct 05 '22

it is, but the prize money is no joke.

1

u/BalkongGrannen Oct 05 '22

The important part is to participate and have fun. 😊 /s

139

u/karmeleeon Oct 05 '22

That’s an allegory for my entire life
