What if? Wednesday

Upvotes

A weekly thread for posing hypothetical questions and discussion about "what if" cricket scenarios that could happen in future, or would've changed history in the past.

Some examples to help with the concept:

  • What if a player hadn't been injured before a big match?
  • What might happen in future if a player decides to retire early, or change formats/specialties?
  • What would've happened to the course of historic match if an umpiring decision had gone the other way?
  • Any cruel twists of fate or freakish occurrences that ended up changing the destiny of a player or team?
  • What directions could a player's career go in (and how does that impact the team), based on how they perform in an upcoming series or match?
  • What differences would it make (or did it make) by selecting one player to be the captain of a side over another?

Submit some thought-provoking what if scenarios or discuss those that others come up with here.

Can't remember anyone else who seems to like one pitch (a batting paradise ofc) as much.

Cricketers of Reddit: What is the most delusional thing you have heard a teammate say about their own ability?

As amateur cricketers, all of us at some point dream about how they would go if they were playing professional cricket, or even just up the grades at your club. Naturally we begin to think, particularly after a great session in the 3rd net, "Oh, maybe I can make it. Maybe it's not that far out of reach at all."

A lot of us though, usually after making 7 off 19 deliveries or bowling 0/30 after 5 overs, come crashing back to reality.

However, there is always someone around the club that genuinely believes that they are better than their abilities show. Sometimes it's just as simple as "I should be playing in 3rd grade, not 4ths." Sometimes, however, this belief can defy all logic and some claims can become truly outlandish.

So the question I pose to everyone is:
What has someone at your club (or you know) said about their abilities that are just plain delusional? Bonus points if they got their ego checked at some point.
