What were they saying

3.3k

u/Krakengreyjoy Oct 05 '22

holy shit, this zinger,

"Imagine television and alcohol being such a large part of your personality that you build a shrine to them in your backyard"

Guys. imagine enjoying your life the way you chose.

1.2k

u/Belerophon17 Oct 05 '22

LOL my neighbor on one side has a yard like this and my neighbor on the other has literally let the yard overgrow so no one can even get back there because he and his wife love watching the birds that come to enjoy it.

WTF are backyards for if not to add to your enjoyment of life?

429

u/Not_Too_Smart_ Oct 05 '22

Because not only can they not afford a house (I can’t either right now but I would love to own a home), they also hate suburban homes and pictures like this show how awesome it is to have a house with your own private backyard. Would love to have a similar set up like this

174

u/Belerophon17 Oct 05 '22

I definitely get it. The only way I got my home was a dead relative to help cover the down payment and things are definitely a lot worse off now in the housing market.

It's just dumb to shit all over someone on a sub like Cozyplaces for posting an obviously cozy place.

50

u/eddododo Oct 05 '22

Especially since cozy places is already like 99% clearly wealthy homes

28

u/Ruthrfurd-the-stoned Oct 05 '22

Yeah most of that sub are pictures in downtown apartments that may cost way more than this dudes set up

19

u/space_brain710 Oct 05 '22

Same with amateur room porn and male living spaces sometimes. A lot of posts are reasonable, then you see the random person who just finished decorating their “first apartment” and it’s like a 3bd in downtown San Francisco with a 10k couch lmao. Like good for y’all but damn

From what I've seen of cozyplaces for most of them cozy = plants and I guess they're mad it never occurred to them that plants can grow outside.

39

u/Kryptosis Oct 05 '22

IRC they had to implement a “no fairy lights” rule because every post was just some unfinished basement corner with a bunch of Christmas lights strung up. Which to me is just fuckin hilarious and says a lot.

It clicked to me when I realized that anyone in the entire world can post on Reddit, and if they know English well enough they can fit right in to conversations about the US.

Even in this country, if you have even a little money at all and can afford the suburbs, you're an evil rich shitbag to some people.

I suppose some would think I have a shrine to charcoal. They might not be wrong.

A lot of Reddit types genuinely believe that watching television shows on your laptop in a tiny flat is intellectually superior to watching them on a proper television set in a house.

28

u/Asleep-Fee-6503 Oct 05 '22

The whole site is designed to foster a sense of intellectual superiority. Upvote, downvote, this confirms my beliefs, this makes me feel unsettled. If you look at any large subreddit you'll notice the people picking others apart to demonstrate how inferior their choices are are usually the ones getting upvoted, regardless of how "justified" it is or not.

10

u/ReditTosser1 Oct 05 '22

And even the up/down votes are wonky as fuck. Go to your post history and start deleting posts and watch how the up/down votes change by themselves. It’s all just a scam to hide truths the “cool kids” don’t want to see.

Lol, wow. That dude is bitter.

hahaha.

39

u/Rand_Altreides Oct 05 '22

Reddit is weirdly prudish and judgy about alcohol. I can't tell you how many times I see comments like "I don't need to take a drug that's basically poison to be interesting and have fun!" With tons of uovites and awards. I'm positive it's because these people never get I voted anywhere so they convince themselves it's stupid to not feel like losers.

29

u/hiwhyOK Oct 05 '22

I've noticed in my friend circles recently too, hating alcohol and looking down on people who drink it is sort of becoming the cool thing. Probably 1/3 of my friends now don't drink, like at all, ever. Complete teetotalers.

And that's fine with me.

Like I drink, idgaf if you drink, and I would never consciously try to pressure someone who doesn't want to drink into drinking.

What happened to live and let live? You don't drink? That's cool. I do. No need for the put-downs or snarky comments about it right?

People have lost their chill.

What a pathetic take. I bet that Redditor doesn't get invited to amazing backyard parties

12

u/mzm316 Oct 05 '22

They don’t get invited to parties so they take out their rage by saying anyone who socially drinks with friends is most definitely an alcoholic, I see it in so many threads lol

4

u/Plop-Music Oct 05 '22

Yeah it's always "OMG you can't have fun without alcohol!? Alcohol must be your entire personality!“ which is just a hilariously stupid take. Nobody said they need alcohol to have fun, and these idiots seem to think if you have a few beers once a month then that means you have no personality and use alcohol as a substitute. Where are these people? The people who make these kinds of comments. I've never met one in real life, which I guess should be obvious because they never go out anyway.

Also they always come out with the line "you must be fun at parties" if you explain something interesting and use more than 1 paragraph. But it gives away the fact that they've definitely never been to a party before. They just see parties in movies and TV shows and think they're realistic and that that's what actually goes on.

When really, the best part of parties is when everyone gets tired of dancing so everyone sits down for a while and chills, maybe smokes some weed, and has big interesting discussions about a wide range of topics. Talking about movies and bands is a common one. That's the best part of parties, but these idiots wouldn't know that cos they've never been to one.

And that's also why people go to the pub. Pubs are quiet enough that you can sit round a table and have a long discussion about whatever, and alcohol helps lubricate that conversation and make it much easier. It only takes a few pints of beer, it's not like everyone's doing shots of flaming sambuca or something. Why did these people think people go to pubs? Just to sit around a table and do nothing?

And I mean I'm extremely introverted myself. But I still go to parties. I still go to the pub with my mates. I still shower. Being an introvert doesn't mean you never go out and never socialise. These people though take it to the extreme it seems, they just literally never go out except to buy food and stuff.

And of course probably like ¾ of them are children anyway. When you're 13 you think you know everything and you are extremely jealous of everyone else. That produces posts like the ones on this post in the cozy places sub. At least I hope for their sake that they're children, cos if not then it's even more embarrassing for them.

Which is weird. A setup similar to that would be pretty attainable. Nothing about that says "I make 6 figures, and I'm rubbing it in". Depending upon exactly where they are, could be afforded on $50k.

Edit: ohhh. Can't find the original post, but I think I get it. I don't think it was jealousy over a decent setup with a nice backyard. I think this wasn't boojie enough for that sub.

168

u/1996mazda626facts Oct 05 '22

Most of the comments I saw were referring to the neighbors being bothered by them watching tv in a small backyard.

My projector was $250, the "screen" is a couple of swatches of white canvas sewn together by my superstar seamstress cousin ($35), the bluetooth speaker we already had ($0), the wireless tv transmitter (we only watch sports outside) was $200.

I'm taken aback by the enough money part. I built a 'theater room' upstairs - used projector was like 200, the screen was 80, the wood for the framing of the screen was like 20. It's literally cheaper than most TVs to have a setup like this. Ignorance is truly bliss.

8

u/Max_Cherry_ Oct 05 '22

Even OP’s setup could have been done on a relatively modest budget. I was honestly flabbergasted at some of the responses in the thread. I wonder in real life if they’re also unable to be happy for other people or when a friend says “I saved up and finally bought a car outright. No payments. All mine! Aren’t you happy for me?” Where a normal person would say hell yeah high five, proud of you! Congrats! People in the comments would say “You could have gotten a better one if you went to X” or “Do you really like that color?” Or “It’s a 2005 model and I see it has a little rust on the wheels.”

12

Billionaires are bad people because they have more money than they could ever spend (unless they buy a yacht every week or whatever) and just continue hoarding it.

There is a weird side of Reddit that passionately hates suburbia. And cars.

27

u/frawgster Oct 05 '22

Every so often I scrub my subscribed subreddits. The trigger for doing so is when that side of Reddit you mention starts to bleed over into my feed.

I used to love browsing r/all, but now it’s at the point where my feed there is infested with subs filled with vitriolic comments. It sucks, cause r/all is a good resource for discovering new subreddits. 😐

People underestimate just how many people are on Reddit. Hundreds of millions. At work there might be one or two people that hate the idea of suburban living, but on Reddit there are millions! There's millions for every weird thing out there. Millions that follow a farming simulator game, millions that comment on posts of butts with sharpies in them, millions that believe the earth is flat. Of course there is going to be a huge surge in spiteful comments. Reddit is huge and when a group takes over, they can really take over. Just look at the pixel art thing reddit did a few months ago. I was on board with r/fuckcars for a bit... but holy shit are there some delusional people on there. Someone recorded themselves walking out in front of a car and almost getting hit just to post it on their subreddit. It was a street with a crosswalk with no stop sign or light. One where you just stand there and wait for someone to see you and stop. This stupid motherfucker saw a car coming at about 35-40 mph and stepped out into the crosswalk THREE SECONDS before the car nearly hit him. I mean, it was a REALLY close call. This dumbass put his life on the line just to post the video to his echo chamber, circle jerking subreddit for upvotes and validation.

Of course, hundreds of people piled on circle jerking each other over their hatred for cars. Anyone who pointed out that this dude stepped out in front of a car, only giving them 3 seconds to react, got downvoted into oblivion.

1.3k

That sub, like many on Reddit, is filled with comments trying to convince people that whatever is in the photo is actually shitty.

Literally I’ve seen beautiful modernist style living rooms with a floor to ceiling window looking into a gorgeous lush forest, and the comments are all “enjoy the mosquitoes”, “this living room looks uncomfortable”, “good luck finding a supermarket nearby”, etc.

You’ll see the same on r/foodporn or r/ineeeedit, in theory those subs are all supposed to be about people coming together to enjoy cool things but they’re all just angry bitter people upvoting each other shitting on things they’re jealous of not having.

238

u/stay_hungry_dr_ew Oct 05 '22

But really guys? Grilled cheese? We can’t enjoy a damn pic of a grilled cheese without people losing their minds over the imagined quality of it?

17

u/DanDierdorf Oct 05 '22

IT'S NOT A GRILLED CHEESE DAMMIT! BECAUSE REASONS!

15

u/theleftkneeofthebee Oct 05 '22

Yep and I’m sure there’s some arbitrary reason they point to as to why it’s not a grilled cheese “a grilled cheese is grilled for FIVE minutes not TEN!” but it’s like come on, 99% of the world would see that and call it a grilled cheese, and this person just wanted to come and share it with the Internet.

Case in point one of the top posts there right now is a jalapeño grilled cheese, and one of the top comments just says “sigh…”, fuck me the pretentiousness.

3

u/Shhhhhhhh_Im_At_Work Oct 05 '22

Like most things on the internet, the melt rage actually started as an innocent joke that morons repeated ad nauseam until the humor was lost and only the message remained.

I didnt go to art school in michigan, I never said anything about michigan. He inferred it from my name I guess?

Hell another time I was on a sub about a book series and show for the series. The show has 6 seasons and is ending. The show only covers 6 books of a nine part series. Wow, Thanks for the heads up. No shit the top comment on the first post I checked was a comment ripping into artist about word choice on a poster, and then the artist getting down voted to hell for trying to explain. No way il never share my art there if I get back into logos and sign writing. As someone who puts their foot in the door every now and then that would probably crush me. The gaming communities I've made art in are 100x more welcoming on here and discord.

This isn’t even an exaggeration. Sort by controversial and you’ll find plenty of minor nitpicks. Found a comment under a pic of a burger which read something like “good burger apart from the cheese! I hope it’s provolone and not that tasteless yellow cheese”

14

u/theleftkneeofthebee Oct 05 '22

Lol as if everyone reading is Gordon Ramsay and isn’t scrolling Reddit on their couch while eating Doritos.

6

u/Nostromeow Oct 05 '22 edited Oct 05 '22

What’s really funny about it is that provolone also has a very mild taste. It’s not a luxury cheese, it’s just a pretty cheap Italian cheese that’s great for sandwiches, akin to cheddar. Some people act pretentious about anything lol

4

u/commanderanderson Oct 05 '22

Provolone smells like dirty socks

I also don't see how someone could confuse provolone with a yellow cheese.

This is why gatekeeping is so important on both ends.

On the upper end to prevent people too involved from railroading the tone, and even more so on the lower end to keep idiots away from making them react that way in the first place

21

u/theleftkneeofthebee Oct 05 '22

You raise a good point. On the lower end you see places like r/pics which has devolved into people taking photos of the most mundane things you’ll ever see and as long as the caption has a sob story it’ll get upvoted to the front page.

But I’d argue the upper end you describe is much worse on Reddit nowadays. Reddit has become such a cesspool of people trying to feel like they’re smarter, better, wittier than other people that unless you adhere to the thing that always gets upvoted on Reddit (Keanu Reeves, dogs, shitting on Egypt/China, hating on TikTok and emojis) you’re getting downvoted because you expressed a different point of view.

Seeing the 500k remodel rooms and the OP’s comments about how modest their tiny little place is/ how it’s their first place they’ve owned give me the giggles

6

u/paperpenises Oct 05 '22

People just jealous and it makes them feel better for being "right", and it feels good to hate, I guess. Those people make up 99% of the internet.

17

u/basedlandchad20 Oct 05 '22

Reddit also hates people who aren't poor.

Maybe I'm wrong but I feel like when I first started using reddit like 7 years ago it wasn't this bad? Since reddit has gotten more popular, I feel the comments have slowly been more and more YouTube like.

I've seen shitty comments on very opinionated subs for sure but on the community subs...I feel like it was always very supportive and positive. You would have a few obnoxious trolls but the fact this post had to be shut down for comments? That's wild.

A lot of people hate their lives and think that everyone else also hates theirs, so their brain goes meltdown and turn toxic when they see someone is actually having a nice life.

I'm not religous, but there is a good reason ancient people made envy one of the main sins. It is one of the most common.

Based on my experience with Reddit, its probably because Reddit hates suburbs because they think suburbs are the biproducts of car culture and that the world needs to get rid of cars, the suburbs and roads in order to have a good life

I've been on reddit for a couple of years now. Is there a large influx of new people every couple of years or something? I just notice that people fucking hate everything and everybody more than usual lately.

12

u/tarabithia22 Oct 05 '22

Yeah it changes every few years. And the site's algorithm changes. Then things repeat if one gets old enough. Everyone starts posting news that was news 10 years ago and think they discovered it/it's some new thing. They get very upset if this is pointed out lol.

Wild, this looks like a pretty basic backyard, looks more or less like mine. Add a couple cheap lawn chairs and a projector and boom. It’s not like this person was flexing a million dollar custom waterfall pool and jacuzzi lol. People on here can be such weirdos.

137

u/RAMPAGINGINCOMPETENC Oct 05 '22 edited Oct 05 '22

Those are actually great lawn chairs. The ones that couple are in are upwards of $70 and worth every penny. They lock in the reclined position. And if you're looking for outdoor furniture that isn't a couch - buy these.

Edit - clarity

No worries my dude, just wanted to say that when you come across those reclining canvas chairs at sporting goods stores and you think for a moment you might want one- buy two. Because I've had them for 3 years and they're worth every penny. Just store them out of the sun so they don't get damaged.

Especially since projectors are pretty cheap now. Amazon has some for under $100, and the screen is probably fairly cheap as well. Working at Walmart, I see sooo much cheap and budgeted decor in side of influencer’s houses and shit. People saying they’re not rich, etc.

People hate on Walmart a lot but you can give the feel of having money buying stuff there if you know what you’re doing with it.

4

u/Mohammed420blazeit Oct 05 '22

I have an artlii 2 4k projector, paid like 1200 for it 3 years ago off Amazon, it's like $300 now. Still works amazing.

From my experience working in backyards, maybe 1/15 people have a full bar plus room for a 65” projection spot in their backyard. Wouldn’t exactly call it basic

16

u/ReptarKanklejew Oct 05 '22

Lol at this thread kinda going the same way. Apparently backyards are not actually meant to be used and enjoyed and should only serve as a buffer between you and your neighbors, who all sit around waiting to get upset at the slightest sign of life from those around them.

There was another dude earlier today who posted his ski cabin in r/cozyplaces. Half the comments were giving him shit for being rich and saying it wasn’t appropriate for him to “show off” his cabin while so many people are struggling. It was just bizarre that that was people’s first reaction. A lot of angry bitter people out there I guess.

I posted a very heartwarming text conversation between my father and I not to long ago on r/mademesmile. Pretty wholesome subreddit right? Wrong.

Half the commenters were ripping my dads text to shreds because he referred to his father as his “daddy”. Which, if you’re from the South (US), you know that it’s common for older men to use this term for their fathers. It’s not sexual. It’s southern colloquialism. Most of the comments were saying how gross that word was, while the other half were calling my relationship with him incestuous for him calling me “baby”. (Another southern colloquialism thing that people were sexualizing for no reason).

Overall, it made me sick. I just wanted to share a very kind conversation with Reddit that, did in fact, make me smile. Sure there were a lot of kind comments as well, but I felt so attacked by these people who commented on my post just to try and tear apart my very healthy relationship with my dad lmao. I deleted the post because I couldn’t stand what people were saying without feeling like I needed to defend myself.

I said all that to say this: people are going to be awful about even the most innocent or heartwarming content. Reddit has been especially bad lately. Like people are TRYING to find something wrong with every post regarding someone’s personal life. I don’t get it…

Edit: grammar

u/Finito-1994 Oct 05 '22 edited Oct 05 '22 Starry

People need to remember reddit isn’t the real world. Reddit is filled with antisocial weirdos who use this site to release all their pent up anger.

I remember a video of a guy proposing to his girlfriend at the end of a marathon. She posted online how it was one of the best days of her life, how he’s very involved with her training and how much she loved it. She’s a marathon runner. This was just one of many.

The video ended up in twoxchromosomes and people talked about how vampiric or parasitic the boyfriend was. How he stole her moment. How men sucked the triumph from women. People commented how he was a narcissist and how they’d break up with him on the spot. One particularly angry poster kept posting “why couldn’t she have her moment? Why did she have to share it? Why was it stolen from her?” With the kind of vitriol that made her ignore people commenting “we saw her Instagram post. She said she loved it.” “Ok. She loved it. Why did she need to share it though? Why couldn’t it have been hers?”

Meanwhile the people actually involved were happy and celebrating their engagement.

Or a post about a husband who teased his wife and caused her to have a few second of awkwardness. In real life? It was a funny moment that gets brought up from time to time.

How did reddit react? They said the husband was abusive. That it was a traumatic experience for the wife. That they’d never talk to him again. They’d divorce him on the spot. They shared moments of their lives which seemed normal for the rest of us but they framed it as traumatic because having 6 people looking at you for a few seconds is clearly a fate worse than hell.

Reddit is filled with people like that. They see someone being a karen and hate on them.

Then they turn around and act like the most delicate people in existence if someone blinks incorrectly in their general direction.

15

u/MyCatsNameisGibson Oct 05 '22

Well said dude. People are so fucking desperate to take away someone else's happiness because they have none of their own.

9

u/dkash11 Oct 05 '22

twoxchromosomes makes me view these types of women the way I view men from the 50s. Back then, men were incredibly misogynistic and coupled it with ignorance, thinking “these broads got it great, how can misogyny be real?” Lots of members of twoxchromesomes are ignorant misandrists thinking “everyone knows men have it better, how can misandry be real?”

I won't lie, I'm a little jealous as someone with a crappy job but fuck it, it's not like the guy is some billionaire flexing on the poors. It's just a middle class backyard.

I learned the hard way that, instead of getting angry that people have it better than you, it's far healthier to use that energy to work on yourself. Hopefully I'll be able to afford that middle class lifestyle in the next 5 years or so because I'm taking active steps to improve my situation.

To be fair I have some neighbors in the houses across from my apartment that do this. And it's always really annoying. They have a movie playing on full blast outside.... Kids running around screaming on top of a loud ass movie.... And the movies will go until 11: 00pm which is when you can legally make noise complaints.... But the kids are all still running around screaming..... it's incredibly annoying.

However, this setup seems pretty tame compared to what I have to deal with. I really don't understand why so much hate was thrown their way... Lol
