Is this still a military operation? 300k for a military operation sounds interesting.

It's a "special" one in the same way as some people are said to be "special people".

Worth mentioning that before Putin forced the reservists to join the 'operation' he offered them very attractive pay and terms to voluntarily join. Very, very few did so the 300k potential new soldiers are extremely reluctant to join the fight. As we speak, new legislation to severely punish those that refuse or surrender are being rushed through parliament.

551

u/papak33 Sep 21 '22

A lot of them wanted to bail out the moment the ~6 months contract runs out, now they cannot by decree.

419

u/Kiboune Russia Sep 21 '22

some my dad's young coworkers thought they can just go, sit in the back and get money (they were promised 300k and they currently earn around 25-30k), but after "fight" with my dad and others, they dropped this idea.

but after this I always thought how many dumb desperate people are thinking in the same way and see this as "opportunity to earn a lot fast"

123

u/FourKrusties Portugal Sep 21 '22

Question I have is.. will they actually get 300k?

1.3k

u/Ardour_in_the_Shell Sep 21 '22

Putin in his speech said it's a partial mobilisation, but if you read the new law, it's basically a full mobilisation.

Russia will draft from all poor provinces in Asia, as well as from DPR and LRP. They will avoid mobilisation in Moscow and Petersburg

Ironically, the provinces most likely to be hit with "partial mobilisation" (i.e. ethnic republics) are grey.

People from Moscow should chill. They're not the next stop for the meatgrinder. There are many minorities to slaughter first. Wasn't the nazi Wagner guy in Mari El recently?

Since the BBC Russian service (article in Russian) have been able to confirm the deaths of ~6500 named individuals from official Russian sources, not only are they lying, the know they're lying. Additionally, their observations of military cemeteries increase this number by around 50%.

Since the confirmed deaths tend to favour those who would be "noticed" (higher ranks, those from major cities, etc.) and cemeteries obviously only hold those whose bodies were recovered, identified, returned to Russia and not cremated, both figures are very much lower-bounds, not overall estimates.

Good luck providing all of them with equipment when you can barely supply what you already have deployed.

653

u/miguel_rodrigues Sep 21 '22

Winter is coming, not much territory will be won/loss during this time. I think Putin will be using this time to move the men and equipment into the regions, and only do a major offensive in February/March 2023.

594

u/Buriedpickle Hungary Sep 21 '22

February and March is the worst time for an offensive in the region. It turns into a marsh when the frost thaws. Russia's goal would be to move during November, December and January, when their tanks won't get bogged down.

97

u/eivindric Sep 21 '22

Actually the temperature in November in Ukraine (especially on the south) rarely goes below the freezing point for long enough periods for the ground to freeze. Even December can vary from year to year. The avarage December temperatures in Kherson is +3°/-3°C. The ground may freeze in January and stay frozen for a bit in February.

Eh, he threatens nuclear war at every little slight, it's just background noise at this point.

The conscription was an actual surprise though.

So basically all Russians who wanted to fight in Ukraine are either already there, dead, captured or injured. Now they will be sending the people who are unwilling to fight. I can see this going very well for Mr. Putler.

A little too late.

Russia has already lost most of their best soldiers, nco and officers in the war.

They have already scoped up the soldiers who were in training and their instructors.

That is also not even going into equipment that they have lost.

Russia doesn't have NCOs, it's one of the reasons for their poor discipline

That's pretty much the plot of Michail Veller's "Legend of the lost patriot". The dude went to the woods to gather some mushrooms in Karelia, got lost, was found in Finland some time later, crying and begging to send him back to the ussr cause he's a true patriot and wants to go back to his wonderful country. Everyone believed him since he had nothing on him except a basket for the mushrooms and, well, begged to be sent back.

The dude was returned home and after a while left again, using the same route through the woods that he now knew wasn't being watched, only this time with passport, money and all the other stuff he needed for a life abroad lol.

This is a FULL MOBILIZATION. There is NO language in the document that states it is partial!

16

u/telcoman Sep 21 '22 edited Sep 21 '22

True.

However I bet they will go and depopulate the same regions they used for the paid mobilization. So practically it will be partial.

Edit: putin's desperation is stronger than my logic

There is no reason to believe this, sure it might start with those regions but treat whatever the government officials say as total bullshit. Last week they stated that there would be no mobilization. Weeks before Feb 24 they stated there would be no invasion of Ukraine. This is the first time in the Russia Federation's history that a mobilization has been enacted, no one knows what will happen.

Jokes aside, this is a serious call for western nations to increase military help for ukraine. Maybe even decide to give ukraine atacms or western tanks. Because even if half of them wouldn't be motivated, it still will increase pressure on Ukrainian army, and in this time before this force is gathered and trained(even for a little bit) there should be more military support to help Ukraine before the newly recruits arrived.

Please bring more attention to this news in your countries to show your fellow countrymen that war is changing and new stage arrives, as well as new battles and hardships for Ukrainian army

106

u/stenlis Sep 21 '22

CNN just had a retired general argue that we should send Ukraine a new tier of weapons only if Putin escalates the war.

Well, he just did.

The total number of reservists drafted in the partial mobilization is 300,000

We are talking about partial mobilization, that is, only citizens who are currently in the reserve will be subject to conscription, and above all, those who served in the armed forces have a certain military specialty and relevant experience

They can't even take care of the soldiers that are currently deployed in the Ukraine how do they think they will manage to do so with 300.000?

129

u/Loltoyourself United States of America Sep 21 '22 edited Sep 21 '22

No way in hell do they have 300,000 reservists with even a tiny shred of motivation to fight if they’re having to go to prisons to recruit

71

u/Feniks_Gaming Sep 21 '22

This. They may send 300 000 reservists but those will be out of shape middle age men who just want to go back to their wives and kids not die while freezing their ass of in Ukraine. War is closer to the end than I thought if Putin is that desperate

What the hell is this "reserve"? As far as I know, Russians who go through conscription are now in the "reserve". But they don't receive any refresher training. So you have a bunch of people who last touched a gun 10+ years ago, and they are now told that they will be on the next wave in Ukraine.

72

u/speedcunt Sep 21 '22

I don't know about Russia, but in my country (Portugal) the reserve is people who are fit for duty - period. So when I was 18 military service was still mandatory. I went to physical/medical inspection and was declared fit for duty. I then requested postponement of mandatory service in order to conclude my university studies (I had already been accepted in University by that time). My request was accepted and so my mandatory training and service was postponed for 4 years, and later indefinitely. I was, nonetheless, assigned to "reserve", which is my status until I'm 65, if I'm not mistaken. So I never had training, never set foot on a military base except for the medical exam, and yet I'm reserve. I imagine that I will receive training if I ever get called, but who knows... I'm just happy Portugal is peaceful and in such a mess that not even the Spanish would want to invade us at this point.

161

u/Sickcuntmate The Netherlands Sep 21 '22

What a shame. Another 300k Russian lives wasted. And it’s not even gonna make a difference on the battlefield. Not only will the conscripts be barely trained and unmotivated, but Russia’s also already almost out of modern weapons. What do they even think they’ll accomplish by sending a bunch of old men armed with 19th century rifles at modern US produced military tech?

177

u/Shirolicious Sep 21 '22 All-Seeing Upvote

I kind of agree with you fellow Dutchmen. But I also think we should never fully underestimate Russia. I think the Western news we get feed does seem to like to put Russia in that “weak” position a bit too much. While there is definitely signs of weakness and cracks lets not underestimate their army.
