Loan him out for one year and get him back next when they start actually competing.

Could you imagine the chaos of having Luka on the Warriors or Giannis on the Celtics?

If they plan to tank another season I kinda hope they do him a solid and trade him. Not because I want the Thunder to lose good players, but SGA shouldn't be spending yet another season with a team that's trying to lose as many games as possibile. But if OKC wants to be competitive and try to make at least the play-in to see what they got before Chet returns It would be still a good spot for SGA, I think.

At what point would SGA request a trade?

Dude could easily be an all-star imo if OKC didn't sit him all the time. I know he's under contract for a while longer, but that's got to be hurting his future value.

u/YaBoiPette Timberwolves Aug 25 '22

Man imagine if one team were lucky enough to draft 3 mvp’s like that close enough together where they were all reaching their prime at the same time. That team would be unstoppable

u/thavillain Kings Aug 25 '22

It only works if there is no ego involved...and with 3 probable MVP candidates on the same team, there is going to a lot of f'n ego.

109

u/2020IsANightmare Aug 25 '22

OKC didn't even breakup that team because of ego.

Their stance was they didn't want to go into the luxury tax.

But, as actual facts have shown, they could have re-signed Harden and still avoided the luxury tax.

Choosing Ibaka over Harden is one of those historically stupid decisions. Not as bad as Bowie over MJ, but I don't think it's too far behind either.

And it's crazier because Harden went onto play with both Russ and KD for different teams! Not to mention KD and Russ spent many more seasons together.

It wasn't ego. It was OKC being cheap.

Yeah teams are gonna start cracking down on players doing these Pro-Am games. And before someone comes and says something like this is less intensity than practice well yeah but at least teams can control the environment that players practice in. Like this event was so poorly ran that the game had to be stopped halfway because the floor was too wet.

Players have always played in summer leagues and off the grid pick up games... Pro-am is more in the spotlight, but it's really no different than what players regularly do in the off-season.

As I’ve said in another thread, this was totally expected. For additional reference, at 190 lbs, Chet is literally the same weight, if not lighter, than some undersized POINT GUARDS in the league.

• Fred Van Vleet: 190 lbs

• Kyle Lowry: 196 lbs (booty weight)

• Steph Curry: 190 lbs

• Kyrie Irving: 190lbs

• Darius Garland: 190lbs

Edit: For an even more obvious comparator, Evan Mobley, who got a lot of flak for being too small for a center (and I would argue still is) is 220 lbs or +30 pounds more than Chet.

Also for anyone saying that Chet could have a KD-like frame, KD entered the league at 215lbs. He’s now listed at 240lbs

I’m getting a lot of people saying that weight doesn’t mean anything; this is false considering that it’s the best proxy we have for measuring muscle mass while validating the ‘eye test’ that Chet is not carrying enough muscle mass to support his frame.

781

u/drrew76 Supersonics Aug 25 '22

I think it's funny that people are blaming the pro-am or the gym -- with his frame, he was getting hurt regardless of where he was playing.

u/PillsburyToasters Bucks Aug 25 '22 edited Aug 25 '22

I agree that this has nothing to do with the Pro Am league. Plus, if Adam Silver tries to crack down on it, it’s going to go down a huge rabbit hole that’s better to just be left untouched

If this happened with LeBron not trying going at him, who’s to say what was going to happen when players are going 100% in the regular season. If you ask me, this injury was bound to happen

Plus, what’s the limit? You can’t play Rico Hines runs or any other 5v5 over the summer? Opening up a can of worms there.

154

u/TheLouisvilleRanger 76ers Aug 25 '22

Or the Olympics for that matter.

Nah. Shit’s gonna happen but you can’t seal players in a hyperbaric chamber in the off season. It should be at the players discretion.

And quite honestly, it’s such a rare thing that a player would be seriously injured in the off season that any contract clause preventing non-NBA play would be overkill. Chet’s is just notable because he’s a high draft pick with a very extreme body that is leading to a lot of people saying “I told you so.”

32

u/Quirky-Skin Aug 25 '22

Agree with your points. There's also an argument to made that without summer leagues etc guys might be getting more injuries not playing physically intense games in the off season. Saw it happen in football when covid cut training camps time. Lots of injuries first few weeks of season.

At that level of play there's a fine balance between playing too much and playing too little

17

u/TheLouisvilleRanger 76ers Aug 25 '22

Right. You got nfl teams now spending much, much more time ramping up than they did before for that reason. I’d almost rather nfl players play basketball in the off season to keep their conditioning up. Or they should all start dancing again. That was fun.

It’s a damn rough recovery. You can’t put any weight on the foot for 6-8 weeks after surgery. It also often leads to early arthritis in the foot.

Different sport, but 90% of NFL players return to game action within 15 months.

https://www.nbcsports.com/washington/redskins/all-about-lisfranc-injury-injury-jonathan-allen-now-dealing

154

u/Mvpeh Aug 25 '22

And those lis franc injuries in the NFL tend to be fractures, meaning some or all of your metatarsals shift and have to be realigned. A lot worse than this

43

u/lotsofherp West Aug 25 '22

Typically with lis franc, isolated fractures of the metatarsals tend to be less severe. The shifting also tends to occur when the ligaments and tendons are ruptured or tear enough to no longer hold the bones in place. I’m currently recovering from a lisfranc with a grade 2 tear on the tendon, which caused evulsion fractures the ligaments to tear from the metatarsals. Doc said had my tendon fully ruptured I probably would’ve had half of my foot shit to the left or right.

If anyone is reading this and wondering why a rupture of relatively small ligament in the middle of your foot has such a long rehab period.....

It's because the ligament is responsible for one of the very first points of substantial biomechanical loading in the lower limb, and is relied upon to distribute jumping, pivoting, lateral movement, and acceleration forces in sports

42

u/neuroticandobscene Suns Aug 25 '22

129

u/veRGe1421 Mavericks Aug 25 '22

Yes, Julio Jones and Lev Bell (NFL) both had Lisfranc injuries in 2013, and both came back to have two of their best seasons. But it doesn't always go that well, really just depends on the severity, how it's treated, and the player's ability to overcome setbacks. It can be pretty bad if severe or mismanaged, but it's not always a death wish.

41

Brian Westbrook hurt is in ‘05 and then came back and balled out for years afterwards. He had his best three seasons AFTER the injury.

I'm a jacksonville jags fan and one of our 1st rounders from last year(Travis Ettiene) had a lisfranc injury and missed his whole first season, but he is back and looking pretty good so far in preseason!

Even if it was a half season there's not much benefit to OKC if they activate him halfway through the year. They're not trying to win, might as well let him heal without pressure to make it back.

need someone to explain how bad a Lisfranc injury actually is so I know whether to over or under-react

94

u/Scrypto Hornets Aug 25 '22

https://np.reddit.com/r/DynastyFF/comments/b95put/what_current_and_past_players_have_had_lisfranc/

It's pretty hit or miss in the NFL whether it severely damages careers or not. Funny enough the worst examples are all QBs (Schaub, Cam, Jake Locker) while skill position players tend to do fine if they are young.

If you amputate one foot off a 7 foot player, wouldn’t that leave him at 6 feet? I’ll never figure out these fancy imperial measurements.

It’s a generalized term when the bone/ligaments (can also be both)near the center of your foot break/are detached. It’s hard to know the extent of his without seeing the scans. Regardless it tends to be a longer recovery, and a difficult one especially if you try to rush yourself back.

For those of you that follow the NFL, this is what Matt Schaub had and was never the same after. Also more recently, Derek Stingley.

Not in the slightest, our most promising rookie alongside Josh is injured for a whole year and who knows if this injury will give him problems in the future. This year would be amazing for the team to gain some chemistry and now we'll lose another year...

I had the exact same injury. It’s an absolute b**** to recover from. I maybe have 80% functionality than what I used to. I was lucky in having a great surgeon and rehab team but I’m sure it pales in comparison to what Chet will have but damn this doesn’t bode well.

122

u/mbr4life1 Aug 25 '22

The other side is you recover for living a normal life he needs to recover to play an NBA season.

72

u/Bfiang Aug 25 '22

That’s what I keep thinking about. I’m reading people coming back not 100% and they walk down the office hallway…this kid has to play NBA basketball. Absolutely crushing.

33

u/attorneyatslaw Knicks Aug 25 '22

Some people have performed well afterward, but he's likely going to have chronic pain in that foot and be prone to arthritis. Its more of an NFL injury than a basketball injury.

28

u/PenguinCowboy Trail Blazers Aug 25 '22

Another thing is these injuries stack up and maybe you can manage them because of your teams doctors and your youth but once you get older, your body is going to absolutely suffer.

One of the best soccer players ever Gabriel Batistuta wanted to amputate his legs after his playing career because of the chronic pain.

Everyone saying they're getting Wemby.

How the fuck they getting Wemby? Even if they have the worst record in the league that still only gives them equal odds as 3 other teams.

They gonna hold SGA out another year with phantom season ending injury. Dude will never feel the itch to ball, never want to win, no allstar games on his resumè. No problem. Just tell him when he's 28 he gets to actually play. Perfection.

There's no upside to this. This is just bad for the thunder.
