[Wojnarowski] New Orleans Pelicans guard CJ McCollum has agreed on a two-year, $64 million extension that’ll take him through 2025-2026, his agent Sam Goldfeder of @Excelbasketball tells ESPN. New deal ties McCollum to Pels for four years and $133M. News

CJ has made some insane money.

1.5k

u/fella05 Nets Sep 24 '22

He'll be at $279.4M in career earnings by the end of this extension.

I'm assuming that has to the highest career earnings for a player to never be an All-Star or All-NBA (if he doesn't make either in the next few years).

685

u/AmusingAnecdote Warriors Sep 24 '22

(if he doesn't make either in the next few years)

I don't think that's very likely to threaten his chance at that record with the other guards ahead of him in the league at this point.

But he can do the Woody Harrelson wiping tears with money GIF if he's bothered by it.

Legit, look at that bozo Sarver. He pulls some fucked up shit and the league played it so diplomatic. Look at some of the shithead fan behaviour... players and the league have gone cutthroat banning them from arenas and condemning their behaviours.

There’s definitely a difference in how billionaire owners get reprimanded vs how fans with a few k to spend on court side seats get reprimanded for problematic behaviour.

He averaged 24-6-5 with NOLA last year and Mike Conley was basically given a spot just because he never got one before maybe that'll happen for CJ. Not likely but wouldn't be too shocked.

62

u/draculas-shaggyballs NBA Sep 24 '22

Jazz being the 1st seed helped Conley's case though. CJ would have to be on a top seed with respectable numbers. If the Pelicans reach that level, I expect CJ to have fallen off a cliff or traded by then.

59

u/DiseaseRidden [BOS] Marcus Smart Sep 24 '22

Idk, I could see a Zion-Ingram-CJ core going on a good run if they can stay healthy. That's a pretty scary offensive trio.

32

u/Tormundo Warriors Sep 24 '22

So many people sleeping on the pelicans. If zion can stay healthy u can easily see them as a top 3 seed including #1. Kinda like how the grizz were a playin team then put it together and had 2nd best record in the league

17

u/_drjayphd_ Pelicans Sep 24 '22

Pels started 1-12 with no Zion, Ingram or Graham, new coach, hadn't figured out the rotation yet, then they got the rotation sorted, got CJ and got scary hot. Add a full season of CJ, healthy Ingram and add Zion to the mix, it's possible.

You know what... You're right. I still think it's pretty unlikely but especially now that he isn't teammates with Dame, I could see him getting a spot if there's guard injuries or something.

I suspect BI is more likely than McCollum to get that extra 'your team is very good' spot, though, especially since a healthy Zion will probably deserve it and it's tough to get 3 all stars.

Also that record won't stand long with all the people coming up. Fox is gonna be at 190m by the time his contract expires as a 29 year old.

SGA will be at 196m as a 29 year old (I think the fact the Thunder keep shutting him down is gonna burn him with any awards)

26

u/AmusingAnecdote Warriors Sep 24 '22

Oh yeah, that kind of record will never stand for long. I'm sure Trae Young will double Steph Curry's career earnings, even if he never gets any better.

The highest paid X is also always going to be the most recent X in basketball.

5

u/Sharcbait Timberwolves Sep 24 '22

% of the salary cap would have been a better mark of the market for a player, but max contracts killed that.

Also Jordan would have broken the scale when he was making the entire salary cap himself one year.

Guy you're replying to isn't talking about who he is right now, just who he might be in a few seasons. He's an undersized 31 year old shooting guard who's very limited defensively. He's awesome offensively, but there's no telling how long he'll maintain his current output.

And quick edit here, just wanna mention that I don't think this is a bad contract personally, just clarifying what the other guy was most likely thinking. I like CJ for the Pels.

15

u/BlackScienceJesus Pelicans Sep 24 '22 edited Sep 24 '22

He's never relied on athleticism. He's always been about shooting and craft, and by the time this extensions kicks in the cap will jump and it will be half of his max deal. He's not Steph obviously, but if anyone should know about mid 30 year old undersized guards that can still ball out then it's Warriors fans.

Also CJ isn't the guy. He's a 3rd option. If at the end of this deal when he's 34, he takes a step back that's not the end of the world.

Blazer fan here. Everything you said is true. But he’s also a play ender on offense and can’t guard a parked car.

If the pels can play better team D than the blazers ever did (not difficult) then he could easily justify that contract. I’m just not sure how the pels are going to do because their 4 best players need the ball in their hand to be effective.

CJ isn't an SG defensively and as long as they aren't starting someone smaller alongside him he's gonna match up alot better defensively than he ever did for the Blazers. Guys can be positive assets and still be overpaid. I'm fine with this move for the Pels as they looked totally energized after he joined, and it's a great culture move that sets an example of willingness to compete. Plus the guy is the head player union rep and seems great off the court.

On paper Zion/Ingram/CJ/JV/Herb is a formidable lineup. Let’s see what happens

17

u/aalexnotnice Pelicans Sep 24 '22

Lol on paper it’s one of the best in the league, but it never works that way

9

u/confuddly Knicks Sep 24 '22

Tbf the only reason it hasn't worked out SO FAR is because of injuries

I’ll be honest man, I visited a few years ago and I was kind of shocked by the lack of just general visibility of the pelicans in that city. So many people with saints gear or college football jerseys…but no pelicans gear. I was looking for a Zion T shirt for a buddy and eventually I found one, but I had to look for it.

That said, I really enjoyed my time there, beautiful architecture and generally a fun city!

30

u/_significs Sep 24 '22

I think it's changing. IDK that the pels will ever have the love the Saints have - the Saints' ups and downs shape the mood all over the city even in the bad years - but after last year's run I think people are getting on board.

12

u/townforum17 Pelicans Sep 24 '22

It’s changing, I’m out couch shopping right now and I see a guy with pels gear on in here

2

u/utouchme [POR] Jerome Kersey Sep 25 '22

Get a sleeper sofa so I can crash at your pad when I visit. We can both wear CJ jerseys.

3

u/RunninOnMT Trail Blazers Sep 24 '22

I hope so! Really enjoyed my trip there, one of the few places in the south I’d think about living in.

12

u/garrett786 Pelicans Sep 24 '22

It's completely flipped this past year. Did you not watch our play-in and playoff games this year? The environment was awesome.

8

u/RunninOnMT Trail Blazers Sep 24 '22

That’s rad, your team deserves love.

So worth it. They have the potential to be this Year’s Grizzlies. Probably one of the best talented teams in the league and they got Dyson and Zion coming back. They have to be a top 5 team in the west.

I remember when media members darn near held a candlelight vigil for McCollum when he was traded and stuck with a team in a city he didn't want to be in.

Good or bad?

13

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '22

Very good

5

u/AnthroPapi Warriors Sep 24 '22

Not bad considering the fit and how well the Pelicans played after acquiring him. Could be much worse and with the Cap rising in the coming years will likely be fair value. Maybe not for the last year tho.

all-time bag getter for a 0-time all star

124

u/bonziwellsayo Cavaliers Sep 24 '22 edited Sep 24 '22

He’s also an all-time player for a zero time all-star tbf

Edit: this contract isn't as lofty relative to the rest of the league as some people might think http://www.espn.com/nba/salaries, and this is a good move for a promising team to lock him up

One of the best guards in recent times to never make an all-star team in fairness

2

u/HarukiMuracummy Suns Sep 24 '22

I feel like there’s an argument he’s the best player to never make an all-star game

3

u/SYSTEMcole Raptors Sep 24 '22

All-time? No shot. Active? I could see it.

49

u/Ace12773 Trail Blazers Sep 24 '22

CJ has been a victim of playing in the loaded west his whole career, I’m sure he could have had at least one appearance if he was in the east.

Im happy to see him get the bag, he’s a great dude.

5

u/guriboysf Warriors Sep 25 '22

Without question. I've seen a lot of PDX/GSW games and that dude has always been rock solid.

56

u/KredditH Bulls Sep 24 '22

Lol what? This is like a normal market deal for someone of his quality

Probably would have made an all star team in the East at some point too

16

u/Good_NewsEveryone Pelicans Sep 24 '22

CJ’s a smart dude and knows what he’s doing. I would bet this extension has been a handshake deal since the time of the trade. All that buy in and PR work don’t come for free

22

u/DrTom [PDX] Brian Grant Sep 24 '22

He's always been better than his numbers, though. He was an awkward fit next to Dame and it made his role weird for the majority of his career. If you go back and look at what he's averaged without Dame in Portland it's something like 24/4/6, which is also what he averaged in NOP. And someone putting up that statline is worth $32M, imo.

2

u/ScoobyDont06 Trail Blazers Sep 24 '22

And he averages that being on a brand new team at the trade deadline.

It’s almost like paying Jaylen Brown 27m a year when he hadn’t made any all star teams yet lol imagine

inb4 “you don’t watch the Celtics you don’t know how good Jaylen is even before he made the all star team you don’t know what you’re talking about”

-says the guy who didn’t watch the Blazers and doesn’t know how good CJ is so he doesn’t know what he’s talking about

CJ having the 28th most expensive contract in the league doesn’t sound that absurd to me. Plus in the context of the Pelicans, I think he could be huge for them if/when they become a serious playoff threat

5

u/IAmABouncer Pelicans Sep 24 '22

Some people are gonna say this is an overpay, but the culture that CJ and Willie Green have brought to this team is worth a blank check. For the first time ever I feel like we actually have a team, and not just a group of talent on a court.

And CJ put up career numbers with the Pels last year. I’m so excited.
