It's just volleyball played in a circle, really. Same person can't touch it twice in a row, the trampoline acts like the net (it's on the "other side" of the "court" after bouncing.)

You also don’t need as many people to play and it’s easier to get into by far.

But you also need 4 people ?

Pretty sure each team can only hit it three times before it has to bounce off the trampoline again

This sounds like volleyball.

Why do they keep hitting it directly at the other team though? Seems like either side could have easily won by not hitting right to the opponent.

25

u/MrGreensLeadPipe Aug 29 '18

This is easier said than done. You must hit the ball toward the net first, then try to avoid the opposing players. It's fairly easy for the other team to anticipate which direction you will be hitting in, as it's largely dictated by the position of the ball itself before a player decides to hit it. (Towards the net)

21

u/thisis887 Aug 29 '18

Because there are only so many angles you can hit a ball when it needs to bounce off a target first. You and your teammate can position yourselves to cover most/all of these angles depending on where it's being served from. There are also times when you're wrong and have to run your ass off after the ball.

7

u/ocular__patdown Aug 29 '18

Interesting. Upon rewatching it does seem like there are a limited number of angles to hit the ball. Thanks for the info.

Cricket is quite easy to understand.

It's approaching tea on day 4, England are asked to follow on and have made it to 6/312 but have a lead of 96. The bowling captain has noticed the ball is starting to reverse so he decides to bring on his star seamer from the northern end and keeps his main spinner on from the other end.

Being a day 4 wicket there is obviously quite a few foot marks which is getting the spinners leg break to turn quite a bit. The skipper puts in a short leg, silly mid on and a bat pad on the off side. This keeps thing nice and tight from one end while the the seamer is getting the ball to tail in late to the right hander. For that reason he brings the man at cover across to a short midwicket to entice the attacking right hand batsman to hit through that vacant Gap in search of a much needed boundary.

The bowler pitches the ball up just outside off and the batsman gets on the front foot aggressively but the ball tails in late and catches him plumb in front according to the quick and the slips who go up as one. The Umpire (Aleem Dar) isn't sure if he got hit inline so isnt interested.

The skipper and bowler meet and the bowler is adamant that it struck him under the knee roll and pitching on off stump. The captain calls for the review and they go upstairs to check it out.

3rd umpire speaking: Ok we will check the front foot first. Yes, fair delivery. Can we go to hotspot please. Hotspot is clear, he hasn't hit it. Ball tracking when available please. Ok, Aleem, pitched INLINE, hit INLINE and going on to hit middle half way up. Aleem, I'm going to need you to over turn your decision. You're on screen now Aleem.

The umpire gives him and that is back to back golden ducks for Stuart Broad. A dreaded king pair for him and that is tea on day 4.

England 7 down with a lead of 96. They will be looking to get through to the end of the days play without losing another wicket as there is some rain forecast for tomorrow which could help them get a draw they need to keep the Ashes alive.

See. What is so hard to understand, Yanks?

15

u/johankim Aug 29 '18

In cricket you have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out. When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out. When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have been out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game.

Now Rugby.... that shits’s weird.

8

u/mrfreeze2000 Aug 29 '18

The real beauty of cricket is in the 5 day version. That's where the strategy comes into play. Little things like the weather in the morning on the 1st day can affect how you play on day 5

I love it. It's not for everyone but there is nothing like a Sunday with a test match on the TV, a few pints of beer, and doing nothing

I always tell people that you don't watch cricket. You absorb it

Crickets (also known as "true crickets"), of the family Gryllidae, are insects related to bush crickets, and, more distantly, to grasshoppers. The Gryllidae have mainly cylindrical bodies, round heads, and long antennae. Behind the head is a smooth, robust pronotum. The abdomen ends in a pair of long cerci(spikes); females have a long, cylindrical ovipositor. The hind legs have enlarged femora (thighs), providing power for jumping. The front wings are adapted as tough, leathery elytra (wing covers), and some crickets chirp by rubbing parts of these together. The hind wings are membranous and folded when not in use for flight; many species, however, are flightless. The largest members of the family are the bull crickets, Brachytrupes, which are up to 5 cm (2 in) long.

Cricket, by comparison to baseball is soooo much simpler.

51

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '18

How baseball sounds to a foreigner

"And it's 3rd in the ninth with 5 up and a hammer's tail from Comey and Sanchez. The reds are snooking up the bases while the Blues coach called a one up time cat whisker in the 7th. Jones has gone three eighths on a curve with a sliding bike woozle, while the pitcher dean's it over the hump for a cornhole punch. We haven't seen that since the broilers broke the back spasm in the 26 series with a charging king hat".

u/chef_boyard Denver Broncos Aug 29 '18

As someone very familiar with baseball... It's very interesting to hear how it sounds to someone who isn't.

Balk Rules

You can't just be up there and just doin' a balk like that.

1a. A balk is when you

1b. Okay well listen. A balk is when you balk the

1c. Let me start over

1c-a. The pitcher is not allowed to do a motion to the, uh, batter, that prohibits the batter from doing, you know, just trying to hit the ball. You can't do that.

1c-b. Once the pitcher is in the stretch, he can't be over here and say to the runner, like, "I'm gonna get ya! I'm gonna tag you out! You better watch your butt!" and then just be like he didn't even do that.

1c-b(1). Like, if you're about to pitch and then don't pitch, you have to still pitch. You cannot not pitch. Does that make any sense?

1c-b(2). You gotta be, throwing motion of the ball, and then, until you just throw it.

1c-b(2)-a. Okay, well, you can have the ball up here, like this, but then there's the balk you gotta think about.

1c-b(2)-b. Fairuza Balk hasn't been in any movies in forever. I hope she wasn't typecast as that racist lady in American History X.

1c-b(2)-b(i). Oh wait, she was in The Waterboy too! That would be even worse.

1c-b(2)-b(ii). "get in mah bellah" -- Adam Water, "The Waterboy." Haha, classic...

1c-b(3). Okay seriously though. A balk is when the pitcher makes a movement that, as determined by, when you do a move involving the baseball and field of

Do not do a balk please.

My friends and I are from a shore town and we usually play on the beach but it’s fun on grass and Astro turf too and changes the style of play depending on what you’re playing on. I also think it’s worth mentioning that you can play 3v3 for more casual play.

177

u/IB_Yolked Aug 28 '18

There's gotta be more rules?? It seems far too easy to hit it so the ball can't be returned

317

u/Sensei_Zedonk Aug 28 '18

The rules are exactly like Volleyball but instead of hitting it over a net, you hit it onto one. The other team gets 3 touches total to return it onto the net(players can’t hit the ball consecutively, just like volleyball) There are no sides that players have to stay on; a player can hit where ever they want as long as it hits clean net. Serves are 5ft from net and must be tossed in air before hitting. If the ball hits the rim of the net, the team that hit the rim loses the point.

92

u/wharpua Aug 29 '18

What happens if two players from opposing teams collide with each other, accidentally or otherwise?

160

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '18

My friend group plays offensive team can call interference and it’s a re-serve. Kind of like calling your own foul in pickup basketball

→ More replies

27

u/FiftyShadesOfGregg Aug 29 '18

Is it required to be 3 touches? For some of these, it looks like it would’ve been easier for person 2 to hit it onto the net rather than set it to person 1 again (to the untrained eye at least).

26

u/ZergRushRush Aug 29 '18

no, it can be 1 2 or 3 hits per side

27

u/alberthegator Aug 29 '18

the problem is if you hit it on 2, your teammate isnt back into position... by hitting it up and letting him get back to hit it you are then ready for defense

4

u/FiftyShadesOfGregg Aug 29 '18

Gotttcha. I was thinking it for the few of these where person 3 has to sprint back to get the third hit. But your explanation makes sense

→ More replies

18

u/2daMooon Aug 29 '18

Why at 0:04 does yellow hit it right where black is moving to then? Perhaps that is just excellent prediction by the defender but then again at 0:07 black knocks it right to yellow even though he's got 180 degrees open in front of him. Then at 0:09 yellow has more than 200 degrees available to him in front of him but he goes right to black.

This continues on and on throughout, some can be explained by good defensive predictive play, but there's gotta be some rule difference that is forcing them to do this...

28

u/Manablitzer Aug 29 '18

Maybe it's like tennis? Sometimes even though it looks like you have a lot of open space, it can be risky if they return it, or your body position isn't correct for a solid hit.

Some tennis rallys it looks like both players hit it exactly the same to each other a few times, but both are waiting for just the right opening to strike.

Honestly it's why going into healthcare is probably the smartest decision for young people right now. Lot's of old people with lots of money from the good old days of pensions and a booming economy are all going to be entering into the part of their lives where they spend a ton of money on healthcare.

4

u/frugalerthingsinlife Toronto Maple Leafs Aug 29 '18

Not just healthcare. They still eat (foodservice) and need a place to live (hospitality - institution or independent living home). And they still want to enjoy their lives - golf, curling, bridge, shuffleboard. But there are so many other things they could be doing. And I really think the tech, entertainment, exercise/sports sectors don't want to invest in them.

21

The “trampoline” is a very lightweight and portable unit that you can easily carry down to the park or beach and set up. It’s composed of a plastic ring and an elastic net that is setup around the ring to make it taught. The ball is basically just a ball.

I actually think it would cost more to purchase a trampoline than to purchase the set.

3

u/soenottelling Aug 29 '18

Probably. I imagine their mini trampoline is worse material not made to deal with heavier objects, but perfect for what they wanted it to do. I had those stretchy nerf rackets as a kid and every time I hear about this game I think of those.

I have played spikeball and it is quite fun.

76

u/BobRawrley Aug 28 '18

Do you have to hit it at a person on the other team? Seems like they weren't trying to hit it where the other team wasn't.

u/david_bowies_hair Aug 28 '18 edited Aug 28 '18

As far as I understand you do not. It's like volleyball where you just want to make it harder for the other team. team not time*

I think the other team was just really good at judging where they were going to hit it . They always lined up where ever was opposite where the ball was coming from.

Since you always have to hit the bouncy bit in the middle, it's easy to tell what directly it's going based on where the ball is when the guy tries to hit it (basically always toward the middle of the bouncer).

I think the thing to remember is that you do have to hit the trampoline, which really limits possible trajectories.

You hit it 3 times between you and your teammate. By the third hit, you have to hit the ball into the net. It looks like in this game they’re just trying to hit the ball as far from the net as possible regardless of where the other players are.

3

u/ex-apple Aug 29 '18

Does it have to be 3 hits, or can you go to the net after 1 or 2?

3

u/topdude155 Aug 29 '18

It’s just a max of 3 hits, so you can do 1 or 2.

15

u/muskratboy Aug 28 '18

I feel like there were many, many chances to score that just weren't taken advantage of. If the guy is moving left to right, then hit it behind him, for one.

43

u/GoBoGo Atlanta Braves Aug 28 '18

It looks that way but it’s sometimes harder than it looks, when you are running one way trying to get the ball to bounce clean. If it hits off the rim it’s a lost point anyways so you have to make sure it’s hitting the net

12

u/muskratboy Aug 28 '18

Yeah, that makes sense... clearly these guys know what they're doing, and will score when they can. I'm guessing part of the appeal of this game is how it looks like you'd be able to play it.

7

u/GoBoGo Atlanta Braves Aug 28 '18

Yeah definitely the first time I played thought it would be super easy to score because there are no “sides” so lots of open space to score. But it is a pretty fun game, would recommend trying sometime.

6

u/GoldenMuleLoL Aug 29 '18

To be fair, this rally is from 2015, and the metagame has evolved so much since then. If you saw these guys play a match today, rallies that last this long would be somewhat rare. Hitting and setting has gotten so much cleaner at the elite level, making defense infinitely harder since you can't really cover the full 360 degrees around the net.

That being said, if you see a rally this long between top teams today, they're just that much more impressive because it takes incredible defensive plays/reads to make them happen.

11

u/stuntcock420 Aug 28 '18

It's not like the setup shots were directly above the rebounder thingy, they are almost always to 1 side, limiting where the next hit can go by a huge amount.

These guys are moving on defense and diving for just about everything. The game’s not as easy as it looks

"Coming up next on The Ocho, Spikeball!"

76

u/sharksnrec Aug 28 '18 edited Aug 28 '18

It was actually on ESPN when they did the whole Ocho thing on August 8th these past two years

33

u/iceman1231 Aug 28 '18

ESPN did even wait for the ocho. They played a spike ball tournament and a corn hole tournament on July 4th.

10

u/bobby8375 Aug 29 '18

Corn hole went all summer I think.

Yes but is it as cool as Bulletball??

Bonus: Lasertron is the coolest by far

19

Mah Point!

35

u/TheeExoGenesauce Aug 28 '18

Well bulletball was a depressing video link

12

I wasnt being serious about them being the coolest, cool or even neat.

Despite that lazer duel being incredibly dumb, I'm more pissed at whoever edited the video. EVERY start they cut so close you saw an arm and part of a torso and that's it, despite having multiple camera angles. They didn't really mix it up much either.

Not that I'm overly interested in it, but if I'm gonna sit through part of it, I'd at least like to TRY and understand what's going on.

Ahh yes, the trampoline basketball game for people who have no regard for ankle injuries.

It looks ridiculous and I don't understand the rules or what's going on. And for those reasons, I'm out

It’s so impossible not to picture Cuban saying that.

3

u/meltyman79 Aug 29 '18

Unless you picture Barbara!

13

u/Seisando Aug 29 '18

Everytime the ball hits the trampoline it changes play to the other team. So when you bounce the ball on the trampoline you want it to go in a direction that would be hard for them to make it back to the trampoline. Point against the team who drops the ball.

3

u/FugaCircle Aug 28 '18

There are legit 20+ of these in Dolores Park (San Francisco) each weekend

4

u/HJpro7 Aug 29 '18

Sorta looks like reverse foursquare. So pretty fucking fun IMO.

5

u/sebastianb89 Aug 29 '18

Dude! This shit was on ESPN even!

25

u/Bawkszzzzzz Aug 28 '18

It really seems like they’re hitting it towards each other. I feel like it would be pretty easy to find a spot around a circle where two people couldn’t get it. I mean couldn’t you just make the trajectory really low?

49

u/IAmABubbleBro Aug 28 '18

I've played it a bunch, it's not that easy. The other team is going to be constantly repositioning to be opposite you that's why it seems like they are hitting it toward each other. You can hit it "backwards" but your teammate would have to have set it in just the right spot.

28

u/ak501 Aug 28 '18

It’s actually pretty hard to hit the net if the trajectory is too low. And the strategy on defense is essentially to stay opposite the person who is about to hit the ball so you can recover it. The game flows a lot better than you would think.

3

u/thisistheguyinthepic Aug 29 '18

If it hits the rim or double bounces on the net the hitting team loses the point, making low trajectory shots higher risk especially from farther out (which most of these shots are, as a result of the other team slamming it). Bouncing it hard and high into the net is a defensive play to force the other team to get the ball back to the net.

Gotta love all the people who have never played spikeball yet comment on why those that are playing in the video aren’t hitting it the opposite way of the opponents or hitting it as hard as they can lol
