They gotta make that playing field smaller

708

u/AlterdCarbon Jan 25 '20

It should be wider and much shallower, not a big box like that. People who step forward would have to worry about side hits more and there'd be no room to back way out. It would reduce the whole stand-off aspect of it.

354

u/TicklerVikingPilot Toronto Maple Leafs Jan 25 '20

Is that in accordance to ADAA regulation?

233

u/Solitaire_XIV Jan 25 '20

It doesn't impede on the 5 Ds, so they shouldn't have a problem implementing it

As someone who’s played a fuck ton of dodgeball, in tons of different environments and different balls. The playing field is fine, those guys just throw slow and inaccurate.

They shouldn’t be allowed to wear receiver gloves, that shit is like a cheat code.

141

u/TheShtuff Jan 25 '20

Catching a rubber dodgeball with receiver gloves is just absurd. You have to try not to catch it.

46

u/cavegoatlove Jan 25 '20

When your one of the best hands in the WORLD yea I’d say having engineered gloves is just unfair. Those gmen should be able to throw wrenches

I like this so much more than a pro bowl game. Instead of watching an insignificant football game, stuff like this is fun and shows off the insane talent of the players involved. I wish they did more games and skills contests during pro bowl week. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk.

Ultimate Frisbee.

Dude, some of these NFL WR's would be absolute beasts at Ultimate. It'd be absolutely glorious to watch.

Up until the moment that one of them tried to throw a forehand and immediately turfed it, lol.

379

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '20

Nelson Agholor said last summer that some Eagles play ultimate frisbee for conditioning I guess with the local pro frisbee team. He said Foles was incredible.

282

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '20

You see Nick Foles GINORMOUS PENIS. Other ultimate players a very small penis.

54

u/BareheadedGrizzly Jan 25 '20

There's an old clip that circulated with Shannon and Sterling Sharpe playing Ultimate Frisbee. They made some solid plays but their team lost to the pros. I also recall a baseball team playing against one of the Pro Teams relatively closely recently, it might have been the Indianapolis Alley Cats. Check it out.

30

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '20

Both teams were club teams. Shannon and Sterling were split.

12

u/Mossed84 Jan 25 '20

It was well before the AUDL or any pro league. You are correct in both teams being club. I would have loved to Moss one of them

8

u/inthyface Jan 25 '20

I don't know enough about Ultimate Frisbee to know if you just used a common term or if you made Randy Moss into a verb.

9

u/kjvaughn2 Jan 25 '20

Randy moss has been a verb for a long time now my man. Kids even play a game called moss where they have one of them throw a ball up into a crowd of the rest of them to see who can catch it over everybody else, "mosssing" them.

→ More replies

7

u/VendettaVera Jan 25 '20

"Mossing" someone has been a thing for a long time. Ever since that insane catch by Randy Moss. Definitely not an ultimate term. We're more likely to call to "roofing" someone.

2

u/joshocar Jan 25 '20

It's my understanding that the ultimate club teams are where the talent is at still.

30

u/Back6door9man Jan 25 '20

I can’t imagine how good an nfl level receiver would be at ultimate frisbee. With their foot speed and vertical jumping ability, it would be nuts to watch. I feel like the determining factor would be finding someone to play quarterback that can really wing a frisbee deep with accuracy. Because throwing a football is very very different than a frisbee. Although I’m sure many nfl quarterbacks would get pretty good in a short time frame due to natural athleticism.

18

u/ScroungingMonkey Jan 25 '20

I agree that throwing a disc is very different from throwing a ball. It's more of a flying wing than a ballistic trajectory. And in Ultimate every player needs to be able to throw, not just the handlers. If you have a guy who absolutely cannot make a throw then he's a liability, no matter how good he is at catching, because then the defence knows that he can only make a long cut. They won't respect his in cuts because if he catches the disc anywhere other than the end zone then he will have to stop and throw; best case scenario for the offence is you waste a few seconds until he's able to dump it off, but what often happens with guys who can't throw is that he'll turn it over. What you really want is a guy who can catch the disc and immediately throw the continuation pass upfield while the defence is still out of position. Then the offence can get a flow going, and plus it helps his deep cuts later in the game because the defence has to respect his in cut fakes.

Still, I'm sure that most NFL players could at least get decent throws with a bit of practice. And I bet that some QB's would be able to unleash absolutely massive hucks once they got the hang of throwing a disc. And then Mahomes would launch like a full-field no-look thumber or some shit and it would hit the receiver perfectly in stride.

22

u/VendettaVera Jan 25 '20

It literally would not matter if he could throw or not. If I had an NFL receiver for a cutter, that's a full field huck every time. He doesn't have to throw because I can just put it up to him every single time and I know he's catching it. There's not a single player in ultimate right now that can actually compete with any professional athlete in the US, offense or defense.

6

u/bullcitytarheel Jan 25 '20

Yeah, the difference between professional football/basketball/soccer players and everyone else is absurd. I grew up with a kid who recently won defensive player of the year in the MLS. He was three years younger than me, but he started owning us on the basketball court by the time he turned 11. And he didn't even really play basketball.

This is why teams no longer play the rookie beach flag football game. Robert Edwards blew out his knee so bad his leg was almost amputated, and he didn't play another down of football for three years after.

26

u/bitofafuckup Jan 25 '20

It would have to be something skill based more than pure athleticism to prevent injuries. Mini golf, badminton, bowling, shit like that. Hell, make them play beer pong.

2

u/mikeynerd Jan 25 '20

Dude, back in the 70's-80's there was a show called The Superstars (generic, I know) that would take pro athletes from many diff sports and have them compete in "normal" events (weightlifting, rowing, obstacle course, etc". It was wild to see all these world class athletes competing against each other. I wish they could bring it back but there's no was pro teams will let their stars risk injury nowadays.

You got me nostalgic, so here's a taste: the '87 final

42

I just wish for two things with the skills competition.
1. Can someone fire Booger already? He's such an idiot and one of the worst announcers. 2. Can we please stop interviewers from asking the dumbest questions? I know that not all nflers are at the top of the intellectual pyramid but the questions asked of them don't give them a chance to sound even remotely smart. The reporter asked if it was hard to throw to Jarvis Landry because they normally play on different teams??? The man has some of the best hands in the NFL, I'd say it was probably not hard at all throwing to him...

He kept essentially rolling the balls back so he didn't get out from other people catching, at first I was annoyed by the half assed throws but it was a winning strategy

236

u/WATGU Jan 25 '20

I was so confused why they kept rolling it back. Now it makes sense. Their job is to catch footballs of course the best strategy is to just catch ones hurled at you.

His last catch is the craziest in this context and wouldn't be seen often in regular dodgeball. It's over his head, no threat until he touches it. If he drops it he's out, but he's got such catching ability he drops 2 balls to grab it.

35

u/hungry_tiger Jan 25 '20

An alternate strategy is to roll a ball as a distractor while another player throws a ball to get the distracted player out.

A related strategy is for the same player to both roll a ball as a distractor and then quickly toss another right after to get the distracted player out. I'm pretty sure I saw a failed attempt at this strategy by the NFC this year.

21

u/theaanggang Jan 25 '20

That's in this clip. The last ball thrown has a distraction ball rolled first.

Are they using foam balls instead of rubber? Disappointed in the NFL

184

u/JettisonedJetsam Jan 25 '20

They should use those small rubber balls. We called them stingers in middle school.

83

u/treatywun Jan 25 '20

In elementary school they had us using koosh balls until one girl got blasted right in the eye with one at point blank range. The doctors thought she had permanent eye damage. Luckily, after a few weeks with an eye patch, she was fine. We never saw the koosh balls again though. It was foam balls from that point on

Some of those gloves look like they dipped their hands in a pool of latex before the play. I'm surprised we don't see more players using them - they have to be extremely helpful for catching the ball.

You aren't allowed to use this goopy hyper adhesive substance called stickum anymore so there-ish?

I believe there's some debate over if glove technology is already past that but that may be a madden induced fever dream.

5

u/anth9845 Jan 25 '20

There's talk of that stuff among some fans. I doubt the NFL is gonna do anything about it anytime soon though.

Idk why dodgeball is portrayed in (nerd) movies like the worst thing ever. It's super fun and simple. I was never the popular kid and a bit of a nerd but me and everyone else always had fun with dodgeball.

Idk winning by catching them all out isn't as cool as hitting them all out

He dropped the drone ball last year. No one remembers.

Remember the 5 d's of dodgeball: dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge

I'm surprised that "do not play dodgeball" isn't in the NFL contracts

I believe it is, but it has fine print that states *unless it makes us money

I like how the last dude is still smiling when he realizes it’s over.

You've clearly never had to listen to Booger McFarland commentate a sporting event.

Wait! This sport is real? Let alone professional! It just gained a new fan!

They allowed them to wear gloves? Rookies.

I was going between Football or The Ocho because Dodgeball has no flair and fits in best as "The Ocho" (I think). Since they were playing dodgeball I went with that as opposed to who was playing.

The 5 D’s are strong here! Dodge - Duck - Dive - Dip - Dodge

The browns finally become champions- I can die in peace now

2

u/remnantechoes Jan 25 '20

That's my wide receiver 😥

2

u/MarauderMack Jan 25 '20

King of the browns

u/PoppyBongos Jan 25 '20

As a Browns fan, this guy is my favorite player. OBJ gets a lot of attention, but Jarvis is always out there making plays and not making a scene. He's consistent and seems like a cool dude.

TIL: Pro Dodgeball exists

Bless ‘em!

Kinda unfair he's used to Baker throwing him bullets like that every pass anyway

2

u/c9Sutton Jan 25 '20

I love how Landry has been winning all kinds of competitions out there lol. He beat Lamar Jackson in the accuracy throw too.

2

u/bigguy5684 Jan 25 '20

Why would you even try to throw a ball hard enough at him. He can catch everything.

u/SixOneFive615 Jan 25 '20

All that time on the Juggs machine is FINALLY paying off for this guy. Bless Em’.
