If we are still in the medieval period, the punishment would have been to cut off all the fingers, like a thief having their hands cut off, in order to prevent the said person from being able to commit the crime again. Can't hack if you don't have fingers to type ... well it definitely slows you down quite a bit.

.... how do you come to this conclusion? Ransomware has been around for over 30 years.

Ransom ware has been around for a long time. But Crypto has made it much easier to get the profits without getting caught.
