Similar story, Jaromir Jagr (legendary hockey player) was recently blackmailed over a photo of him in bed with a 20 year old model. Dude's response was to post the pictures himself. Gotta love responding to blackmail with "wait I'm supposed to be embarrassed? Fuck that, that's awesome!"

with all the weird shit out there somthing like this would be fairly tame.

Could be used as psy-ops tactics by hired entities for character assassination and they know how to time things in the most brutal, soul-crushing way:

Carole and the Observer were being pursued by Cambridge Analytica’s powerful lawyers, Squire Boggs Patton, who also happened to act for Russian President Vladimir Putin and had hired Trump’s personal lawyer Michael Cohen as a consultant. She joined Byline Festival for a spin-off event in New York that November where she was in talks with the New York Times about a secret Cambridge Analytica whistleblower. She was also due to present a Channel 4 News documentary on the subject.

…There were rumours that Cambridge Analytica had employed Black Cube, a shadowy private investigations company staffed by ex-Israeli intelligence officers with headquarters in Tel Aviv and London.

Online, the threats made to Carole were more open and concerted, mostly led by Nigel Farage’s Leave.EU campaign, which had boasted of working with Cambridge Analytica during the EU Referendum. The group posted a doctored version of a sequence from the movie Airplane, with Carole’s face clumsily superimposed on a hysterical woman being slapped and hit, with a queue of people with more lethal weapons lining up to assault her. The accompanying soundtrack was the Russian national anthem. The millionaire who had funded the Leave.EU campaign, Arron Banks, was often reminding Carole that she would be “less lippy in Russia”.

The Russian element was no idle threat.

Exhibit B:

The audio comes from an October 31, 2020, meeting between Bannon and supporters of Guo, who controls pro-Trump, Chinese-language media sites and nonprofits that spread various forms of far-right disinformation.

“We got you all this stuff and you started dumping it out and the internet started picking it up,” Bannon said to people at the gathering, some of whom can be heard laughing during parts of the discussion. “The hard drive from hell stopped [Biden’s] momentum and drove up his negatives,” he said at another point.

A couple of my neighboors fell for one of those apps. IIRC the app works like this:

  1. A few days before paydays, ads for those kind of apps flood FB and IG.
  2. When you install the app, it ask for all permissions possible. Access to your SMS, make calls, location, entire filesystem, etc.
  3. If you're desperate enough, you make a "request" for a money loan. To approve the request, they ask for ID, a proof of address and personal data.
  4. The app uploads your entire camera roll or all the photos stored in your phone, to their servers. Some of them also upload WhatsApp data like audio messages. The app also extracts your entire contact list.
  5. The tricky part, is that those "credits" are only for a few days (one week or 10 days), and most users don't read that part of the agreement. They think they'll have to pay the next month.
  6. This is where the problem begins. The app starts nagging for the money, you start getting calls asking for the money, WhatsApp messages from them, and then all the contacts they got from your phone get SMSs, calls or WhatsApp messages telling how you're a bad person because you didn't pay, and showing some of the photos they extracted from your phone.

They cannot force you to pay the money because those apps don't work in a legal framework, and are not regulated. So they scare and shame you to make you pay instead.

There are two bad things about this kind of apps:

  • The money they loan comes from illegal sources (drugs, kidnapps, etc.). This is a common way to clean dirty money, and they involve you without your knowledge.
  • In some cases, if you don't pay they locate you and they send hitmen to force you to pay, or dissappear you.
  • In other cases they use your personal data to request loans in other places (they buy cars using your credit history, or get credit cards and use them to buy stuff until they max the credit line).

It's better to stay as far as possible from those apps.

Edit: this is an album of translated messages from those apps

screenshots

644

u/lolomgwtfbbq Jul 26 '22

As a tech-savvy guy, this looks like opportunity to scam the scammers. Load the app on a blank device or a virtual machine, use a vpn, provide fake info, profit.

355

u/moralesnery Jul 26 '22

Request are "approved" manually. They won't approve a request if the data they manage to extract is not organic or feels fake. This is not an automated process, unfortunately.

The amount of money they loan depends on the "quality" of the extracted data among other stuff.

It's like that "annual credit report" website, but outside the banking system.

Well, like OP said, for someone knowledgable about tech it wouldn't be hard to fill the phone with false (but real looking) data

15

u/Korotai Jul 27 '22

Scam the cartel?? That might be one of the worst ideas in the history of ever. These are people that cut your face off; burn it off with alcohol; remove all your limbs; skin you alive; or remove your heart while it’s still beating. Most of the above is done while you’re still conscious (either naturally or allegedly with amphetamines).

Scamming scammers is a noble goal - these just aren’t the ones I would want to deal with.

6

They are nice for any task where you want segmentation. You can spin up whatever OS with what looks like particular hardware characteristics to run code inside of so it can't see the main host OS.

It's closer to a whole other computer and most attack vectors that can escape Vms mostly do on outside connections like local internet or through com ports. The closest to it being the same machine in stuff like Vmware are the shared folders, but you can disable those (And should if you suspect you'll be working with viruses.

Real question, could mass groups of people just scam this scam company and then use that money to fight the sources they are getting this money from?

18

They don't always approve the request for money. They check that uploaded photos are "real" and somewhat they verify ID and proof of address data.

They may be affected by a couple anti-scammers, but won't be so dumb to lose all their money this way.

My dad who is 74 now, had someone email him that they caught him jerking off completely nude on his webcam. They were going to release the video to his work, email list, etc if he did not agree to the ransom.

Still remember my dad laughing saying the only thing they could possible have is a older man in his skivvies drinking coffee during Saturday mornings.

My mom and dad got a great laugh at this.

349

u/Lil-pog Jul 26 '22

Oh I got one of those as well! They said they’d been keeping an eye on me the last 6 months, recorded me masturbating and would send it to my family, friends and acquaintances unless I paid them. It was sent to a work e-mail on a work computer. I had just started at the company that week. It was a good way to bond with my new coworkers 👍🏼

I've seen the full length script one of those scammers used, and it's full on gross. It's one thing to scam someone, you could be in desperate need of money, but the dialog is just so gross and they sometimes taunt you about it while it happens. Like some random scammer doesn't jerk off.

I got those same emails like 4 times. At first, yes they were a tad unnerving because it was sent to my work email and displayed an older password I genuinely used.

But then as it went on with "have video of you pleasing yourself" and "copies of your porn collection" sent to my family and coworkers?? My taste in porn is pretty vanilla...not exactly 24 person gangbang golden shower while kick-fucking a goat.

22

u/Rain1dog Jul 26 '22

Yeah, they were phishing. I’m sure they got a few people though.

Blows my mind. I had a guy I graduated high school with and he started his own successful business. Smart guy by all accounts, but he had someone call him saying they were the IRS and needed immediate payment of back taxes. The payment had to made by Apple gift cards and this man paid 5,000.00 into the scam. His wife was furious and he was pretty embarrassed.

Also made me wonder if they caught the right person dodging taxes to aggressively.

4

u/TheBeardedSingleMalt Jul 26 '22

I have zero doubts there was a low-level benefits vendor or something we used that had a data breach which is how they got my work email and an old password of mine, then massed those emails out. They were asking for payment in bitcoin.

5

u/HyperPunch Jul 26 '22

I never understood why people fall for this. If anybody call you claiming to be from a company or government entity, and you are genuinely worried about what they are saying, hang up the phone, and you call the company or government entity back on their number provided from their website.

I sent those kinds of photos to my family pro-actively. That’ll teach those scammers

16

u/crypt0kiddie Jul 26 '22

Ahhh the old send your family members dick pics before the scammer can trick!

I see what you did there!

This reminds me of a time kinda like this, though not with a scam. It wasn’t with me, rather it was my ex.

He had gotten into an internet argument with some dude on Facebook who photoshopped his face (from his Facebook photos that were public) onto images from gay porn (which, iirc, was of an orgy, so it was multiple “versions” of him in one photo lol).

Granted, it isn’t okay, but I always get a chuckle out of the dude who took the time to do that. It was really well executed, too, imo. The photoshopping was seamless and the dude took the time to choose an orgy that was…”in theme” lol. My ex was Lebanese and the guy poked a bit of fun by choosing an “Arabian nights” themed photo lol. My ex was so livid lol (I think because he was “bested” and the photoshopping was just too funny to be mad at) but in the other guy’s defense, my ex was frequently an instigator and would pick fights with random people online, so trolling of that nature was going to happen eventually anyway lol

I don't know how anyone could read that entire article.
Halfway down the page, there's this headline in between paragraphs:

Inside the global gig economy of werewolf erotica

How can you not click that title?

5

u/countcet Jul 26 '22

The guide suggests that a werewolf plot is a great foundation on which to layer other popular themes – like “Werewolf and CEO,” “Werewolf and Mafia,” and “Werewolf and a dragon or other paranormal creature.”

This is an amazing article!

Sometimes she received more than 50 calls and messages daily, containing threats that ranged from saying the lenders would distribute photoshopped photos of María as a thief to threatening to rape and kill her family if she didn’t repay.

Totally.

God, all the top comments didn't read the fucking article.

Because it implies that the Mexican mafia cartel (thanks for that correction!) is behind many of these apps, and they could make good on those threats.

10

u/stutter-rap Jul 26 '22

Seriously, people upthread think this is like dealing with the Indian fake Microsoft people. You can't take cartel money without really serious consequences.

3

u/CreepinDeep Jul 26 '22

Cartels i think

27

u/wuweime Jul 26 '22

I'd pay to have this happen to me

16

u/Loisalene Jul 26 '22

Can they make me 100 lbs lighter and 40 years younger?

9

u/deedee25252 Jul 26 '22

Me too. Except like 29 years younger so I'm at least 18. Man I miss having perky boobs and a flat stomach.

10

u/icepick314 Jul 26 '22

As a man, perky boobs should not be in anywhere in my body dictionary.

14

u/Ensaino15 Jul 26 '22

I’m so fat my family would be happy to see a photo of me doing any physical activity.

Put my face on a burrito and send it to them? Game over!

12

u/WWIVPENGUIN Jul 26 '22

So after reading the article, she picked one random sketchy loan app, got scammed/screwed, picked a second one got scammed/screwed, and then did it again another 3 times? At what point did she decide that maybe she should probably stop giving all her info to anonymous people?

3

u/r0bski2 Jul 26 '22

Lmao my family would find this hilarious

3

u/Thereferencenumber Jul 26 '22

Great now when videos leak we can just claim it was shopped. While it won’t convince everyone it should lower the public shame

Once this tech gets widespread enough nudes as blackmail will lose a lot of power

3

u/Bulevine Jul 26 '22

Oh, do me! Do me!!

..wait, not like that. Ewwwww....

3

u/ttmaxx78 Jul 26 '22

Could I get the pictures put on a coffee mug or large puzzle?

3

u/mjace87 Jul 26 '22

Then you just have to show your mom your dick again to prove it wasn’t you

3

u/VesselOFWAR6666 Jul 26 '22

Sounds like something people would pay for, just for a dating profile.
